Vic or Rocco?

Well, I watched the Bass Day 98, several instructional videos by Rocco, and two videos of live ToP concerts, and he only used one finger to fret and the rest to kinda mute the strings sometimes.

A few years back both Marcus and Vic were playing the same night. I went to see Marcus. Later I hear that after Marcus' gig he ran off and joined Vic's gig and jammed with him into the night.

Oh well, wrong choice

I prefer Vic outside of the Flecktones like with Stern or something, he gets a bit showy for my tastes with Bela.

I was so looking forward to seeing Rocco and TOP when they played a few years ago - and I did go to the show but the mix was TERRIBLE - so bad that the huge mid-scooped basically voided everything Rocco did - the band sounded great but without that bass it kinda sucked...

I've seen Vic four times live and he really is such a dynamo when it comes to playing <b>bass</b> - I bootleged a couple of the shows and he just destroys those bass parts, it's like he's deconstructing them and putting them back together everytime he plays the same song - just incredible. I have to say that his solos can vary in quality - as I think he's like the rest of us - he can have off nights too. Obviously he's a few light years ahead of me but as a music critic I think he's only human and he has a right not to always be "blowing people away" - I've met him a few times as well and he really is an extremely grounded person - a great all round guy....bastard! :)

Yeah - they are pretty much the best live band I've ever seen - very entertaining as well - not just po-faced blowing - there's a good sense of humour with the 'Tones - they are cool guys.

Yeah, man. They started playing at what, 8:15 or so, and then they ended at like 11:30 or something. That was so worth the ticket price and the drive to San Francisco.

Best of all, we were among the first people there (although I hadn't ordered tickets or anything, and just bought them at the door -- heh, no $7 service charge :)). So we got to stand out there right in front. Well, maybe 3 rows of people ahead, but it doesn't really matter. That show blew my mind and I'm practicing like all-get-out.

Next time there's a Flecktones concert, I'm going again!

Actually that's not quite true. He explains it in his instructional video that his main fretting finger is his middle finger, but he plays almost as much with his index finger. He frets with his other two fingers as well (like when he plays octaves) but not nearly as often.

Thanks. I didn't get a chance to watch my vid to corroborate. There are many many bassists who play 'flat' handed and it may look like he's not fretting with his fingers [well, more than one] but he actually is. Before I took lessons, I use to play that way too. I used to have guys watch me play [remember back in the day guys used to try and copp lines?] and ask how I played like that.

Heh, two fingers instead of one. Okay, Rocco is super funky, but... come on. I'd see Victor instead anyday.
