Victor Wooten

Just gotta know, how does he do that double slapping with his thumb? I tried it and i wasn't even sure if I was doing it right. Is your nail supposed to be hit by the string? When I tried, it was awkward and wasnt very powerful. I am sorry I just wanna know

Well, this is a very basic explanation of how I try to emulate it.

When doing this, remember that your thumb should be moving parallel to the body instead of perpendicular like when you are normally slapping (ala Flea).

You want to strike the string but keep going through it to the next string and use that next string as a stopping point (with the 1st string, you will just have to stop yourself). Then, after stopping rake back up into the string you had just struck. I like to use the side of my thumb joint on the way down and then the nail on the way back up. Hope this helps.

I was at a clinic with Victor Wooten at a Sam Ash store last year. He uses each finger in both directions for upstrokes and downstrokes. I've never gotten good enough at that to use it much myself and haven't had any real reason to. You have to hit really hard on the downstrokes to even out the volume. Stanley Clarke also does this (so I heard from a bass player who met him and asked about it.) Geddy Lee plays this way too, I'm told, though he only started to in the past decade or so.
Hope that helps.
