Ok I will try another place for a bass. Maybe we could take a trip to KC strings since gas is finally way below $2.
I was way unsatisfied with a Christopher and shen I played. I may look at an englehardt or something.

They are the authorized Shen dealer in Nebraska and claim to carry a variety of new and used basses. It's at least worth a phone call to see what they have. Shen makes some very decent basses in a variety of price ranges. I've tried a couple here in Chicago and was very pleased at the good value for the money.
It sounds like you're really serious about playing bass and it comes down to the sound that comes out of that big fiddle. You will never be able to evaluate that sound without first playing the bass. That's what all these folks are trying to tell you.

Yup... not so different from my situation when I was shopping last time. Both of us had the desire to find a bass that speaks the voice we hear... I was limited by my location, you're limited by your age, finances, and logistics. I do wish you the best.
My post does make it seem like I am criticizing those who responded to the OP. Not my intent -- sorry about that! I was just being sympathetic to the fact that what might have started out as an easy choice for the OP has become complicated. But I think that the comments in this thread, including yours, have been appropriate.
I will give them a call and see what they have. And maybe go down there this weekend.

I was at A Cavallo today, and for a good 45 minutes tried 2 different basses.... Unfortunatly I have not been able to find out the brands, as they told me they cant tell me...??? Dont know why.
I was playing a $3400 X carved bass. Good sound... great playability. Thought it was the only one I could afford.
But he brought out a $4000 X Bass fully carved.... and 10 times better than the other. This is an advanced bass.. (the next one up, a pro, for $8k) Beautiful flamed wood. Ebony, gold tuners.. in all, a great looking AND EXCELLENT playing bass.
I have to say this IS THE BEST BASS I have ever played, and in fact is better than my old friends $9k bass, (forgot the brand)
I will get pictures when I can..... I CANT WAIT TO BUY THIS.... GOT TO WAIT A week or 2 though.

Oh and a pro bassist accompanied me, and what a sound he could get from these things! So much range..... OH THE BASS... rattles the floors and you can FEEL it! Far better than my kay

They are semi custom basses. From China. Then A Cavallo upgraded them, with ebony, bridge sound post, endpin.... And strings......
I have not bought it yet. But its on hold for 2 weeks. Then I will buy it. I have to get the money.

According to their website, A Cavallo Violins sells a few "custom" basses made in China under house names like "Academia Cavallo" and "Concert Bass by A. Cavallo Violins" I'm guessing from the price you're looking at one of their Concert Basses.

The above was my comment at the point at which you were "sold" on the Vienna Strings Hamburg Handcraft bass. It seems you've found your musical "mate" and have made (another) decision. Congrats on choosing an instrument.
I can't help but notice that you seemed to have taken almost none of the advice offered to you by seasoned players. You spent only 45 minutes and, in that time, your budget doubled? It's no surprise that the shop didn't or wouldn't tell you the brand. The bass is likely imported from a shop in China with which the dealer may or may not have an "arrangement." That's not necessarily a bad thing but it does mean that very few here (if any) can offer any opinions on those particular basses.
By the way, if you had mentioned that your budget was $4k, folks here likely would have offered advice more specific to that budget.
Ah, but how many have you played at age 14? I think it's fair to say that, for many (if not most) of us, the bass we own is certainly not the best bass we have ever played. That's even true for players who have spent several times over what you are planning to spend. The point is that it's good to play a wide array of basses both below and above your price-point so that you learn what the differences really are. It's similar to what hi-fi loudspeaker shoppers have always been told: Listen to examples that cost many times what you anticipate spending. It's also sometimes difficult even for long-term players to judge basses across locations. It'll be interesting to hear your thoughts when you compare your new bass side-by-side with your friend's $9k bass.

Drub- again thanks for the support. I did originally have a $1,000 budget, raised to 2k from my mom, then my grandma said she would help out, and said she would pay a max of $2k. So the end total was 4k.
And knowing I was with a professional bass player, who was well aquatinted with basses, *he has a $15k bass*.
And my former pro bass friend who used to work at A Cavallo, restored basses, and set up them, and makes bows of excellent quality--owns a similar model, but slightly more upgraded, and He loves these. And he suggested them for me.
The bass is NOT listed on A Cavallo's website.

I know you are a little overwhelmed at 14, but judging by your multiple comments on youtube doublebass videos, I think you are going to stick with it and make your family proud.
Now in the meantime go play your Kay until it falls apart while you wait for your shiny new bass!
