I think that's the reality of it! So - it's far more complicated buying a DB than say a BG . With a BG - there are well-known brands at every price point and there are many people who can give sound advice on your choice, based on their experience.

Whereas on the DB side of things - it seems every new thread here, reveals a brand-name I have never heard of and very few others seem to know anything about! :eek:

Plus you inevitably have to lay out far more money and there are far more considerations about what makes a good choice....:hmm:

Drub- again thanks for the support. I did originally have a $1,000 budget, raised to 2k from my mom, then my grandma said she would help out, and said she would pay a max of $2k. So the end total was 4k.


And knowing I was with a professional bass player, who was well aquatinted with basses, *he has a $15k bass*.

And my former pro bass friend who used to work at A Cavallo, restored basses, and set up them, and makes bows of excellent quality--owns a similar model, but slightly more upgraded, and He loves these. And he suggested them for me.



The bass is NOT listed on A Cavallo's website.

did you ever find out which shop in China makes it? love to see some pictures of it and maybe hear a sample arco & pizz when you get it dialed in, purchased etc ,good luck

I realize that this thread is now a decade old, but in case anyone else finds it while googling as I did, I wanted to tell people that “Vienna Strings” must be the house brand of Jim Laabs music store. Vienna Strings and Jim Laabs both have the same Stevens Point, WI address given on their websites, which seems like confirmation to me.

I see that the original poster was banned, but it doesn’t seem that he knew that Vienna Strings is actually the brand made by Jim Laabs. He said that he would be buying a VS instrument from JL without seeming to know that he was in fact buying •their• instrument.
