Robin guitars are now made in Texas, but back in the early and mid 80's they had an arrangement in Japan (Matsumoku, I think) to build all their guitars and basses. I've got an '83 Robin Ranger 32" with a maple board that looks like a slab '57 P but has a split pickup like later P's. One of the better basses I've ever played - $400 on the 'bay.

I saw a Tiesco on eBay a few days ago that went for $200 something. I was shocked!

Nobody has mentioned Lyle yet. They were made in the Matsumoku factory next to Univox and Epiphone, and the pickups and woodwork are identical. The woodwork and finishes are really very good.

Ibenez Musician: The first truly original quality CIJ bass, even though it had obvious Alembic influence it was a great original design.

Early Yamaha BB: Yamaha's take on the Fender P and J started showing up in the hands of Paul Macartney and Lee Sklar. The early ones were neck thru and excellent quality.

I never really thought about the Alembic influence until you mentioned it. Yeah, it does have a bit of an Alembic look to it.
My '79 Ibanez Musician:

And a big +1 regarding the Yamaha BB series.

I remember playing a few BB1200s in Sam Ash back in the early 80s, and they were scarily close to a Pre-CBS tone.
