And for the topic I'll tell ya those instruments are not worth 400$ but 100-150$ will be ok for the originality. Some of them are even playable and have their own voice not always bad.

I tried more then dozen of russia guitars/basses. They all have usually one of this things in common:

• Non-standard parts, pickups etc, hard to replace them
• High action with low probability of making it lower (due to bad bridge, neck, nut design...)
• Bad, warp-prone necks
• Bad fretwork
• Bad electronics, mostly TV/Radio-like, no way of figuring/repairing them out, output is often 6, 8 or 12pin, not 1/4 jack
• Bad finish
• Bad headstock-diving, thin plank-like bodies
• Strange, no-life sound
• Bad tuners
• Misc

I do love em thou, limitless amount of fun for tinkers...but without reward (a.i. making them better)

I still own Stela, the guitar with way too many knobs, X-pin outputs and crazy black goo as finish that you can only laugh...

Well, the balalaika my grandfather brought from his business trips to Russia (he was working in a major steam machinery/turbine installation company) has six strings without any mods - and they're 3x2 (three doubled, unison tuned).

Interesting, would love to see one of those. Probably what they where going for with this one too. My bad. But if you check out the link, three of the tuners goes across the headstock, identical to mine. The other three look like they've been taken of a classical guitar or something and are placed vertically on the headstock..

I don't know if thats how they're supposed to be though.

I'll see if I can get a photo of it soon. Really unusual instrument, apparently mine was supposed to be played with a pick, and I remember having it around. It was quite an odd shape, twice as long as a regular (say, Stubby) pick yet more rounded on one end, and pointed at the other. Shame I lost the pick somewhere in transition.
