virtual effects! vst etc

so has here anyone gone totally virtual yet? i know a bunch of musicians who have dumped their real "pedals" and now carry around a macbook and a audio interface.
now you can do the same with an Ipad as well so i dont see any reason why not! i mean imagine all the pedals you could ever want at a fractional cost! and a whole lot of free stuff like amplitube
since these guys have been using it live for a while now i dont see any reason it would glitch out anymore than a "real" pedal dying on you (a boss, a dod and a dunlop bass wah pedals have died/glitched out on me randomly :-/)

there are dozens of ipad/iphone demos out there and am running my bass into a macbook through a 30$ behringer usb interface, a dozen effects online right now. my friends have been doing this at home everyday for last few years i guess am gonna take it live now and see how it turns out!

btw,

this is of course considering you already have a daw like garageband etc but still thats the least of the hassle, getting a daw i mean!

ps: my keyboard player has been playing with a midi keyboard hooked up to a windows laptop with cubase in it for last whole year ive been playing live with him and i think a lot of keyboard players totally rely on a similar setup! i think this is going to be very exciting! sorry for the long post! but have you tried this live? any experiences?

I myself use Native Instruments' Guitar Rig 5 very often. I use it on my laptop, so I do have a bit of latency, but that doesn't bother me too much. Guitar Rig has lots of different effects and amps to play with; if I could, I'd use that instead of an amplifier (at home I do, because I lack an amp).

It is also great for trying out a rig before you buy the real stompboxes, the effects in Guitar Rig 5 are all digital and sound very different compared to their analog counterparts; they do a good job on cloning them though.

i am going to setup a mad pedal pedalboard right now! i can split signals how i like and this is going to be a dream come true! i remember looking at those JC board pics now i can atleast virtually set something close to it. lets see how it actually pans out in real life, be back with updates tommorow

You would still need a midi converter to play synth bass right?
I am interested in using a setup like this for solo stuff. I want the huge set-up of tube amp, pedals, etc for my band.

yeah basic midi converters cost like 30 or 50$ afaik so its not biggie really most midi controllers now have a usb out so you can hook that stuff without a converter but am not sure if midi pickups have that

How is that Behringer interface? Right now I am just jamming with friends, so going through my soundcard is fine.

Something I've been working on, basically the left is dirt with a mutron, right is synthy stuff

You gus can check out the Ik multimedia or behringer pedals. i use the amplitube 3 with Ampeg SVX and Fender packs.

It will be harder and harder to convince me to buy an Amp head and speakers. There is a bass player down here, "São Paulo" that uses a good interface, a preamp and good speakers. I guess if you use a macbook, and a setup like these, you will have less weight and more options to carry your groove around.
