Virtual Hot Sounds Cook-Off Challenge

My first submission:
Going for a rather "clear"/sharp overdriven tone which will irritate the guitar player and push him to a higher octave.
Decided to gave the Fargen Super Collider a swing.

The SWR Redhead bring forward some of the best aspects of the Rickenbacker 4003, its warm barking mids.

Well here we go, my first submission.

I was playing tonight in my living room, while the wife watched that Betty White thing. Yup, time for headphones.

This one is played with my SCPB, wearing year old flats and a foam mute. I was going for an old school P-bass tone like on early 70's records. I think it's there.

Here's my settings, the order is top to bottom.

I also shared the tone in-app. Of course, you will have to tweak it to your preference.

The chain goes:
Dillion 5204 Single Coil P-bass->Apogee Jam-->Jamup XT-->Multitrack DAW (via Audiobus). I used my iPhone 4S.

Here's the clip. Excuse the playing, I've been awake for a very long time and this was literally the first thing I played when I plugged in.

I use my iOS rig as my main performing rig as well as for practice. With my acoustic rock band, my iPhone clips to my mic stand and a DI box sits at my feet.

Going for a warm vintage Ampeg tone.

The first section of the clip, is based on a bassline for a guitar solo section on a love song, which I'm working on for. This love song is written by a friend of mine. He have recorded vocals and acoustic guitar. On that song I've removed the BDDI, thus only B15.

Well, with 1 hr and 11 minutes left for the midnight deadline it's safe to assume that there will be no additional entries.

Here's the link to a SurveyMonkey survey I created for voting. I've never created one of these surveys, but since it's a monkey serving those surveys, and my avatar is a gorilla, well... it should work!

Well wouldn't you know it? This is the first chance I had today to sit down and try to get something in the contest. Oh well if I had another hour :(

For all the movement on the iOS related threads I thought there would be a little bit more interest on this contest... Truth be told, I am surprised.

I can't see how a gorilla-avatar or (heaven forbid) myself could stand in the way of people having fun and sharing their tones. Plus a mag subscription and/or a set of nice strings couldn't hurt either. There was plenty of time to submit entries too.

...but I understand that people may have had their reasons not to participate. And life happens too.

There hasn't been a lot of activity on the voting front either. Therefore, I may be checking out the survey sometime tomorrow, declaring the winner(s) and sending out the prizes.

Thanks to all of you for your interaction, posts, etc, etc, especially to bassbuilder, Duke, and Rip for their submissions. It's still been fun to watch, and I have certainly learned LOTS reading about how people are using their iDevices to create music, practice, etc, etc.

Hopefully this new technology will continue to evolve and who knows what tomorrow may bring!

Ok, I voted... I actually had 5 tones at least to submit but every night I would sit down to play around a little bit I was too tired and just couldn't get into recording and uploading the sounds and images of all the settings. I will still post them to the group anyway cause I think they are cool and pretty different but I'll share them using the in app sharing if anyone is interested in the settings. I don't have the patience to take all those screen shots ;/

My vote for best sound was really close between Bassbuilder and Duke tone from #23... but in the end one of my favorite amps of all time won out ;) I'll leave it at that for now ;)

Prieto, I'm also surprised and must say a bit disappointed that only 3 members submitted a clip. Must be "stage fright" or something!!! :D
All iOS threads did go to almost halt on the last 3-4 days, and I was sure it is a good sign as it meant everybody was busy with cooking something. :)
The cooking contest show really the same trend regarding posting clips in general, as the majority of the clips on the various threads are by...... this dude Duke and the heavy rocker Rip.

I think, maybe, many took this contest too seriously and intended to post something only if they have a perfect clip regarding everything, playing, tone etc.

Actually, I avoided using the GK as I knew it was quite "easy" to get a good rock ans roll tone out of it which would be popular by most :D .
I also assumed that many will post a clip, and assumed most will use the GK.
The SWR though I could not ignore as it brings some of the best aspects of my Ric.
Otherwise I've tried various directions which I thought would be interesting for many.
My P-bass with flats teamed with the Orange OR 30 gives this heavy driven tone from the 70s, something like John Wetton during his King Chrimson days (73-75)
I even went for a more traditional tone by using my Beatles bass and the B15.
My last post was the Ric-O-Sound. This clip was just a test of this possibility. The tone is OK, but needs more work to make it perfect and maybe using Amplitube with the Møller was a wrong direction as I got some clipping from Amplitube.
As it is today a ROS solution will be best if one use 2 iPads where every iPad runs Jamup. Bridge pup runs through a Marshall JCM800 or such, other pup (neck) through the other iPad and SVT BL. Recording must then take place on a PC using a mixer to blend the 2 paths together. But I wanted to record all in MT DAW.

Btw, Thebassbuilder GK tone was indeed a killer tone!

I agree. Tone was the only factor to be judged but perhaps people really wanted to submit only their best work; sometimes we are our own worst critics. I would have gladly posted, but I was expecting more "movement" and didn't feel comfortable posting on my own contest when there are not that many submissions. Also, on the iOS threads people are posting about more "advanced" stuff... new apps, loops, etc. I thought that would be good for the technical submission entry.

You guys (Adam, Rip and you) have been putting up with me... er guiding me since the days of me trying to use my iRig to record with half an ear, so I never have felt like I would disappoint anybody with my submission.

At the end of the day, it was all about people having fun and sharing ideas. Isn't that what a big part of making/playing music is about?

Ok, perhaps on a future contest there will be more participation. Not everyone is yet fully used to these iOS devices... I for one can barely see my iPhone screen, and my chubby fingers always seem to press the wrong lil' button. :D

Yes, I think so too. You guys are the earliest pioneers into this stuff (at least on TB) and I think that this was a great thread to expose more people to the possibilities. I know I will participate next time around - my only problem is that I haven't downloaded Audiobus and MT DAW yet.

So, keep at it boys! TB is listening!

Another reason I didn't end up participating was my iphone4, aside from just having a lot of work and not enough creative energy at the end of the day. At night, the iPad is in use and I am left with my IP4 and it doesn't run Audiobus.....at least it DIDN'T... on a whim last night, I downloaded the update and I can now run Audiobus, JamUp and MTDAW!!! It has to run in the lower 512 mode so there is a bit of lag but it's quite workable. I'm recording some of my patches now just for the purpose of sharing them but if this contest get put on again I'll be sure to find more time when my creative juices are flowing.

The only suggestion I would make for the rules next time would be to eliminate the requirement to take screen shots. I find that tedious because of all the shots you had to take and then move them onto the web and post them.. The Jamup app has the "SHARING" function which could take the place of that since you can just share your tone and let everyone know the name of it so they can download it for themselves. ;)
