I often make pickup covers with my basses. It adds a little extra oomph to the overall look of the instrument. Honestly the first time I made covers I did it because I made a mistake with a pickup route and this was the easiest way to cover it up. Of course once you have the covers on you can't see where the poles are (if you're using a pickup with poles). Someone on one of the FB groups I'm part of posted up questions about multiscale and lining up poles and someone replied with a pic of this magnetic visualization film.
My contention has been that the magnetic field is large enough that the poles don't need to be perfectly aligned in order for them to work. Obviously if you don't have pickup covers you have to consider the aesthetic angle as well. Misaligned poles bug me visually even if it doesn't make a difference in volume.
I have a bass that has a weak G string, and I wanted to see if maybe the the poles were misaligned so I bought some of this film, this small piece was under $10 on Amazon. As I expected the poles are pretty well aligned, so my low volume problem is something else. I guess I kind of knew this as the G string is low volume regardless of which pickup is selected.
Anyway I thought this stuff was a pretty cool tool and I hadn't seen it.
