I'm looking to try a new vocal mic and don't want to spend a fortune. Right now I have a Shure SM58 that I stopped using and I am using an EV Cobalt Co9 that I like a lot better than the SM58. I have tried the Shure Beta 58 and it's OK, but the cheaper EV Cobalt mic seems to sound better and hotter than even the Beta 58. Any suggestions for a good vocal microphone that doesn't cost a whole lot, that sounds good and is a fairly "hot" mic?

Double Bass Vocal Microphones

Heil pr35 or pr30. I and another singer in my group use a 35 live and I also use a 35 in my studio to record vocals in live situations where they will be used in the final mix. Works great with singing drummers but the off-axis high frequency bleed is a bit harsh.
Might I ask why "hotter" is what you are going for? Unless you are in a situation where your PA is out of headroom or your sound guy decides that all the sliders need to be in a nice straight line across the board at 6, isn't "heat" controllable? Maybe I'm missing something.
I'm a big fan of Audix. For vocal applications the OM3 and OM5 could be considered their take on the SM58 and Beta58 respectively. They both sound great and don't have that SM58 muddiness, which I find works well for my voice. The tight hypercardioid pattern is a bonus if you have a fairly heavily mic'ed stage as you can get away with high gain without feedback issues. Your mic technique needs to be more of the "eat it" variety than the 2 feet away off to the side variety as a result, which may or may not take some adjusting depending on how you sing. Price wise the last time I checked they were the same as the SM58 and Beta58.

I'll second that on the Audix OM3. My wife/singer uses one. The engineer who records us recommended it and it's all she uses now. Plus I hear that's what Springsteen uses.
