Vocal Mics - Super-Cartoid vs. "Regular"

The missing piece here, that I think is chronically overlooked in general, is the off-axis frequency response.

The vast majority of vocal mics in common use have horrendously colored off-axis response. It's a big reason why it's necessary to hack the snot out of the monitor EQ to get acceptable monitor levels without feedback.

I used 58s for ages. They work ok. Then I switched to Beyers - an M88TG and an older model as well. I got loads more headroom before feedback and better sound for my voice. I would always ask the engineer if they were cool with me using my mic, and they would always be appreciative, even in situations where we only had one monitor mix and everyone else was using SM58. Mine didn't require any significant work to get it plenty loud, even in really challenging rooms or half baked systems.

I recently bought an Earthworks SR314 and it is BOMBS loud on stage with no feedback issues for me at all. It's exceptionally flat on axis response is part of it, but so is the behavior off axis.

Contrast this with the benchmark SM58, and notice the greater than 10dB sensitivity difference at the rear between 1kHz and and 8kHz:

at 180, it has a sharply rising response - is that what you want to do with the sound coming from your wedges? Then hack up the EQ to try to fix it, which hampers the singers' ability to hear themselves clearly, because you're dumping high end and adding massive phase shift?

I'd rather use better mics when possible, and off-axis behavior is an important spec to consider.

Look at the polar patterns across multiple frequencies - the more it varies on the spec sheet, the more colored the off-axis response will be. It's an issue not only for feedback prevention, but overall sound quality too.

To be fair, money fixes a lot of technical issues, and working with a budget of $400-700 opens a lot of doors - but there's also a lot of bad choices for this application in that price range.

Yikes! That's an $800 (cdn) mic. I would expect it to be the BOMBS! :D

Those are really good for recording guitar amps (and pretty easy to and should be converted to lo-Z).
I actually remember reading the info that came with the mic how to change it to Low Z. But if I recall correctly our Kustom PA with two 412 towers just had the 1/4" plug Hi-Z connections. Don't have that mic anymore because it was stolen along with my 1965 Jazz Bass and my Standel MCIIb/SAM30b amp in 1976. They were as prolific back in the late 60's and early 70's as the SM58 is now. Go back and look at the Woodstock videos and that's what you'll see on stage.

The Ui24r is amazing in many ways, but very difficult to find in stock at the moment.

I bought it knowing it was overkill, but figuring that I wouldn't have to upgrade down the road.

That's another reason why it scares me a little by having little experience with it is that we usually line check and adjust on the fly at our gigs. Most are quick setups and then we go on. There's not a lot of time to make adjustments!

Fo sho! It's an extreme example, especially considering how infrequently I sing. It's a great all-rounder, which is more what I bought it for.

I think considering how a mic sounds off axis can be really helpful even when working with the <$200 stick mic range. I'm just now thinking to look at the SM86 sheet and especially at $179 new it looks more useful to me than a Beta 87a for sure. I think if you just make that mic sound good to the singer on their channel, it'll work great in wedges, and has a peak just around 8k that you can roll off easily with a shelf or LPF. umm, dial in a show, save it, hook the mids up in the same order, recall the show... good to go The Ui-24r is just killer!

For the mic thing... my band songs on hand held condensers, specifically Audix Vx-5. They are a super cardiod pattern and are quire feedback resistan in spite of being incredibly sensitive. our monitors are about 45 degrees off axis and mics are parallel to the floor.

We do try for a quiet stage, we have enough PA to do the lift but sing intricate harmonies so we are stage volume nazi's...

I have tried many, many vocal mic's. The VX-5 is so far out front as don't even think about it anymore...

TheVX5, an excellent choice for lead and background vocals, has a supercardioid pick-up pattern which helps to minimize sound from other instruments on stage from “bleeding” into the microphone. The VX5 is highly sensitive and will accommodate working distances of 1-12 inches from the performers mouth. Depending on the instrumentation and volume on stage, the vocalist may have to experiment to find the optimum working range.
When using stage monitors, avoid pointing the back of the microphone directly into the stage monitor. Instead, set the microphone at an angle parallel to the floor, putting the angle of the mic on a different plane with the angle of the monitor. Allow a distance of 2-3 feet between microphones to avoid phase cancellation issues.
