Unless you need bass in your monitor, I wouldn't go for a 15" wedge.
Instead, a QSC K12 or K10. In-ears, if your stage is crazy loud.

+ 1 to the single 12"; I used a 15" when I it was my only piece of equipment (my bass and canned drums kicking back at me)-- otherwise a 12" will do the job better and take up less floor space. A QSC or JBL would be great--- but you have to spend the $$$ to get a good flat sound w/o an eq.
If you're not a loud band a small powered monitor on a stand could work (my friend uses a Mackie....150).
Raising the rig to waist level significantly increases the volume.

Personally I find those dual purpose main/monitor speakers to be fugly as monitors. I have passive coaxials myself, here's a powered one that is said to be great sounding and a good value: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

OP, please state the price range you are looking at. You could spend anywhere from $200 to $2000 with an open ended question like this.
My powered JBL PRX12 looks darn closed to the unpowered version and sounds great.
I never lost a gig for ugly monitors.
I personally like high side fills for the stage edges, in Willie & Nelson we use a set of K10's on speaker stands, behind of slightly next to the mains, pointing in. It's like having headphones... We place a single JBl prX 612 center stage for the singing keyboard lady ;-) Our stage volume is fairly low as we do some intricate harmony singing.
Might not be pratical placement for all bands. Sure works well for us though.
I like the prx's as floor monitors but I do carry some 2x4 scrap in the van and toweling to lift them up a bit. The angle is a bit low for all but the deepest stages.
For sound company use I have 4 Renkus 12 and horn passives plus 2 15 and horn passive co-axials that punch through anything...

Too bad your location is a big secret. If you're in Canada a used Traynor from L&M is a good place to start....

- they are reliable
- for the price, they sound really good, even with canned music

Downside is, it really doesn't go all that loud, maybe on par with some 10" monitors. But for a band with reasonable stage volume, I can't think of a better deal.
