Vocals and amp

Is it possible to run vocals through an amp? Alot of bars don't have pa's and was wondering if that's a viable alternative. What are the pros and cons of such a setup?

Amps feedback very easily, you can find some decent powered main/monitor set ups pretty cheap something like this will get you through a bar gig, then you can add a second later down the road and link them together.

When I was a poor kid in the 60s we used to do it all the time - whoever had an amp with two input jacks got to plug a mic in. But guitar and bass amps have limited frequency ranges and don't really do a good job on vocals. You won't hurt anything by trying it, however.

If you have to do this, get a multi-channel keyboard amp. - Like a used Peavey KB-60 or KB-100, You can find these for $120 on craigslist. These sound pretty darn good with anything plugged in. They are for keyboard so they are full-range speakers and clean power, I have even used them for bass they are not deep but have some pretty good low-mid punch.

Or just take an old beatup bass combo with you (in case you have that laying around somewhere), plug in the mic and you are good to go.

I have seen a lot of bands do that in small bars or squats.

For vocals you want a (theoretically) flat (-ish) frequency response which *most* bass rigs won't give you.
