Vox Amplug 2 Bass defective?

So I just got an amplug 2 bass for some low volume jamming when away from home and there's a fair bit of white noise coming out of it. Worse on high gain settings and comes through whether the amplug is plugged into the bass or not.

For those that have one -- is this typical or is my unit defective?

If typical, I'm not gonna exchange for another and could also use some recommendations for an alternative.

Hi magnaton. Did you get any feedback when it comes to this white noise coming from the amp? I'm asking as I just had mine and observe the same thing. Question whether I also got a deffective one...?
If you've returned yours, did you find any alternatives?

Hey! Yeah I think it's a very low budget practice amp and the sound quality suffers considerably. I was using some better headphones which might have made it worse -- because some folks seem fine with it. But I found it pretty unpleasant and it just wasn't worth it for me.

Landed up returning and getting an Ampeg scr-di after a good bit more research. Definitely more expensive, but sounds light-years better and you get a DI and fun fuzz pedal to boot. That'd be my recommendation

Thanks for the reply. Though in my opinion this is completely a different price level And also Ampeg brigns some limitations as with Vox you can travel and not even carry about juice being delivered to the unit as it works on batteries. And yes, on the other hand it brings the background noise. But seems there is nothing else in the market that could replace Vox Amplug. I'll try getting something to reduce the noice, but till that time, I'll stick with Vox Amplug.

I have an Amplug, and yes, it has white noise. One of my main gripes about the little unit, actually. I think the makers/designers of this didn't consider that headphones have much more extended treble response than a bass cab.

Turn the tone down on the amplug and all the way up on the bass. IMHO It's an okayish workaround.

Mine has a hiss, too. Not great, but for the price it’s a decent silent practice tool. If you want a silent option (I did, the hiss got old after a while), you’ll need to pay significantly more. The Phil Jones Bass HA-1 and HA-2 units are outstanding, but pricey. I picked up a nice, used, HA-1 here in the Classifieds and love it. Keep an eye out, the PJB units pop up here from time to time.
