So I was searching for info a few weeks ago on TB for a headphone amp which could also be plugged into my laptop or smartphone so I could learn new tunes or practice whenever I wish.

I honestly thought I was going to have to purchase a fairly expensive interface device so I could listen to Youtube, play bass and listen with headphones all at once.

I came across a post which mentioned the Vox amPlug2 for bass. It sounded like exactly what I was looking for, so I ordered one for about $40.

Boy, has this been a great investment! After I purchased a 3' mini plug to mini plug cord from Radio Shack (about $9) to complete the loop, my silent, self contained practice rig was complete. The tone on this thing is fat and round, and includes volume & tone controls, along with multiple gain stages and built in rhythms (which I have not fully explored.) The 1/4" input can also be rotated to best fit your bass. The 2 x AAA batteries are supposed to last for about 17 hours. This is an extremely cool little piece of gear.

I can also envision using this with headphones only for personal warm up time prior to a gig. As you can see, this little sucker easily fits in your pocket.

I'm very fortunate that my wife loves music in the house, and loves to hear me (or my son) play anytime we wish. However, it was cool to find something like this which can be used 24/7.

I'm certain this is not the only choice for such use, but this has worked out pretty well so far for me.

  2. They also made the AmPhone, basically a headphone with the plug installed in it. Works great for me, too.

I use the VOX for practice when I have to be quiet around the house. I also use an old Fender Bass-Pak but it's about the size of a book.
