VST and Impulse?

If I am using an SHB-1 or a TSE BOD VST, should I be using them with an impuse response file or not?

An impulse response of what? What goal are you trying to achieve? Do you feel you need something that those plugins aren’t achieving on their own?

No VST requires an IR after it unless you want what the IR does to be applied to the signal path.

I think in the SHB-1 case, yes as the plugin only models the circuitry of a bass preamp, you can even add a poweramp plugin if you find the sound faltering for some reason.

The BOD already has an internal IR Cab modeled in the circuitry.

Just to add because I'm feeling all smug! I was recording my Am. Std. Jaguar last night, parallel, passive, tone dialed back about 30%, and put the BOD on there. For the 'lounge' type song I was recording it was superb. Rich, warm, full. Never going to win any 'sound like Justin Chancellor' awards, but that's not its thing.
I was a SABDDI v1 user from the very early 90s, and I was impressed how well this plug-in responded.
