fantastic looking Mk2!!! i have to ask what with the 12th fret? is that a 69 or does it signifies something else...i'm actually doing something similar with engraving the higher frets. are you doing chrome hardware on the headstock???

Hey Brethren,

Thanks for the comments.. 2 Years is a long time to wait. Yes, the 69 does have some significance. I wanted a little something unique on the fret board. My sign is a cancer, and the sideways "69" is a very common cancer sign. I like that it somewhat resembles the dual 12th fret markers and thats what Paul and I came up with. I'm actually going with black hardware and tuners, as well as I had Paul build the neck laminates with ebony instead of mahogany. Very exciting. I'm actually leaving the states next week to go pick up this beauty in person at the Wal factory outside of London.

Yes I added the black headstock face for a bit of a dark look.. I wanted the white "Wal" logo to pop a bit.. Thanks for the enthusiasm. I will deff post some pictures from the Wal factory and around London. I'm also going to Rome and hopefully will get a pic of a Wal bass in the Sistine Chapel!!

Well unless I was using the scale wrong, my Walnut Mk1 weighs in at 10.21. I honestly thought it was going to be lighter than that.

Why not get a Mk2?

Great looking pair of Wal's. Can you appreciate much tonality difference between the two given the different facings/body shapes?

the other day TMB mentioned that rich mahogany was the only body core choice. I mentioned seeing a couple of basses on the Wal gallery including these two.

MkIII with sycamore core

mkI with padauk facings and swamp ash core

Are these merely relics of a previous era (like the JG pro model with the leather guard?), or is Paul actually still allowing these options? I get the feeling it's one of those things that if he does it, he really doesn't like it (there was the gentleman with the badass MKII with Purple Heart block inlays who said Paul really didn't enjoy doing those)

Does anyone know who owns the 6 String MkIII with the Sycamore Core? I am very curious the feedback on the tone of this instrument vs. the standard mahogany core.

To me there is a little difference between the two. That Mk3 has a rosewood board with maple faces, seems to have a bit rounder and warmer midrange. That Mk2 has an ebony board, all around it sounds a little more scooped and tighter snappy highs, and makes a better slap bass than that Mk3.

So after a weekend full of internal debate, I've decided to stick with Mk1. I emailed Paul and he is going to shoot for getting my new build roughly a pound lighter than my current one. I've got a question for Maedros or anyone who currently has the M4s Light tuners, are the ears the same size as the standard or really close? I was thinking of swapping the three standards I have, but I don't want my D-tuner to look giant/awkward in comparison.

The ears are alot smaller. Maedros sold his bass, but before that he did post a picture of the difference. It doesn't look good on a 4 string, but it looks good on a fiver.

Thanks for finding that picture. I think I'll just stick with the tuners I have. Otherwise my bass would end up looking really strange.

Actually its a dark rosewood fingerboard. comparing both black Wals i have, my Mk3 with an ebony board and this Mk1 with the rosewood board, i would say @Caca de Kick assessment is pretty spot on.

Does anyone know who owns the 6 String MkIII with the Sycamore Core? I am very curious the feedback on the tone of this instrument vs. the standard mahogany core.

its a heavy beast weighing in at 11.8-11.90 lbs. Giving reviews isn't really my strong suit so take this as you will.....however since it is a 6'er and my other Wals are 4 banger's i'm not sure if the tonal difference is entirely attributed to the sycamore core or having a large ebony fingerboard, but i find it to have more of a brighter, snappy tone. if rosewood was one of of spectrum and ebony was the other end of the spectrum....i'd actually move ebony towards the center and put the sycamore core towards the other end....

Perhaps when my build is ready next year- i can provide a better comparison since i'm expecting my 4 banger Mk3....which will sport a flamed sycamore as well

It's great you made a decision, but why stick with something you already have ?

If i remember correctly you placed your deposit before the price hike (Mk1 £4050 Mk2 Mk3 £4250 ---> Mk1 £4450 Mk2 Mk3 £4650), so the price difference alone would really make me think about it harder since it'll a £400 saving - that is if you would ever think in the future of getting another Wal........ then again if the extra frets and the different body style doesn't interest you in the slightest, guess there's no real decision anyways.
