Wal Bass Club.

I'm thinking my Aguilar Tone Hammer amp may be a bit too dialed back on the highs & midrange focused with the Wal - almost a bit of overkill. It sounds fantastic with my Sadowskys since it really thickens them up.

What amp heads do you guys like with your Wals?

While I love most Mesas, I just sold my D800 because it was way too smooth sounding and completely neutered my Wals' top end, I just didn't like it! this weekend I went back to using my Strategy and was pure tonal bliss again.
The Walkabouts I had were also wonderful with them, so were the RB series Gallien Kruegers are awesome with them as well. So Im probably going to pick up another walkabout as my 'micro'.

I saw your post when I was looking into the D800. Are the Walkabouts that much different from the D800?

I'm not so worried about the Wal needing a boost in the mids, and the Sadowsky now has a new Nordstrand Bigman pickup that oozes mids, so it may not need the extra mids the TH has. I do think the Wal sounds awesome with a little top end grind though.

I tried the Genzler Magellan and while it was nice, I missed the thick mids that the TH500 has.

The GK800RB was my go-to amp in the 80's and 90's, but haven't tried the newer ones.

Thanks

I had a D800 for one day....tried it didn't liked it and sold it here. I also own a Walkabout, M9 and Strategy Eight 88.

To answer your question (at least to my ears), they are VERY different sounding amps; the D800 was dull (again to MY ears), it lacked dynamics/responsiveness and top end.

I can get the strategy, WA and M9 sounding very similar, and I use them depending on the occasion/power needed.

I have tried many class D amps and I've come to the conclusion that I don't like them. My ears like tube amps and/or transformers with tube preamps.

Again this are my opinions, I don't want the internet to explode! hahaha

I've been using a Mark Bass amp which has been great for other basses but I'm not sure it's the best for my Wals. I'm looking to try a few options myself so I'm interested in what other Wal users have to say as well.

I have 2x Ashly SC-40 preamps going into a Crown XTI 2002 power amp, I love it, you guessed it I'm a Rush Geddy Lee fan. I never tried the Mesa's, I bet they're great. I'd like to check them out along with an Ampeg V4B.

I've been using the same GK 800RB since the early 90's, and while I loved it with my Stingray, somehow no matter what I do the Wals sound muffled, I can only get it to sound good with the pick attack knob pulled out. My plan is to get a GK 700RBII when I can afford it, but I've slowly been doing research to try and find a replacement

Pondering letting this magnificent instrument go......but chances are I'd only be taking trades....as in 24 fret Wal trades with a preference for fretted 5's. I may consider some other high end brands (Fodera, Alleva Coppolo, F-Bass, Carl Thompson, or Ken Lawrence) but that's about it. Not sure if I will ultimately let this go.....but I can definitely thank Toolmybass for letting me own this bass.
