"Wall of Sound" - worth a try?

Clearly. And, since he shows he’s living in NYC, I’m guessing this wall of sound will sound great in a 900 sf apartment. ;)
Not to worry -- the "x" in "xnewyorka" means "formerly". This is my house now, and the nearest (and only) neighbor is 700' away, and I am set up in the basement. I'm certain they will hear it, but they don't mind as long as it's not at night. And the deer, bears, foxes, and chickens don't mind either. And we don't complain about their four roosters at 5:30 AM. Hmm, that gives me an idea - maybe it's time for some Alice in Chains at 5:30 AM...

Just a thought, if you had multiple amps you could Daisy Chain them either:

1. Line splitter from the bass
2. Possibly From 1st amp line out
3. Possibly from 1st amp headphone out

Might be better than risking your gear.
Yeah, that's a good idea! I have a Radial Switchbone V2. So I can run one signal to the 800W amp and another to the Strategy. And I have a Whirlwind A/B/Y which will also let me split the signal again, so I guess I can run another signal to the Monique 700 Tardis, and then I would have 1,925 watts to play with. Now that should be fun indeed. There are plenty of cabs to handle it all. I'll just need 2 more speaker cables. Thanks for the inspiration! This will require the 42 db solid earplugs, plus perhaps some earmuffs for good measure...

Just do it. Buy the $40/$50 worth of cables used on eBay for $25 and re-sell them if you don't like the sonic outcome.
As for all the oh-so-predictable "I don't use that many speakers, so nobody else should either" type comments that pop up on these threads: screw 'em. Life is short. Make some noise, LOUDLY.

Personally, I run these two 3620 cabinets (that's four 18s and four tens), with 750W into each as a practice & writing tool in the music room (a converted bedroom) in my 1,000 square foot house.
I'm on 16 acres in the woods, but still.

In the interest of experimentation, I am wondering whether it would be worthwhile to try an experiment driving a 'wall of speakers' consisting of four 12's and eight 10's.
In order to make it work, I would need to invest about $40 or $50 in a couple more speaker cables. Is it worth it to give it a try, or just silly?

My amp is capable of driving 2 ohms, and the arrangement would work out to be exactly 2 ohms with everything perfectly balanced.

Note: This is just for having fun playing at home, because (a) I love bass that I can really feel (and I'm happy to practice with earplugs so I can feel the bass), (b) I am not even in a band at the moment, (c) I would never need this many speakers on any stage anyway, and (d) it's fun to see what things I can knock down off the walls and shelves upstairs.

The arrangement would be:

1x12 z8 \
z4
1x12 z8 /

4x10 z4 + 2x12 z4 \
z4
4x10 z8 /

Then the two z4's in parallel makes z2

Cabs, in order of mention, are:

Harry Kolbe 112 z8
Harry Kolbe 112 z8
Berg AE410 z4
Berg HD212 z4 (or Barefaced Super Twin z4)
Eden D410XLT z8

You're gonna blow the F outta those 2 12s.
Try the 4x10, and the 2x12 instead

The trick is that I built a Series box which lets me put the two 4's in series to get 8. (Easy enough to build, but I was thinking about making them up and selling them for those who need one. Do you think there would be enough demand to make it worth pursuing? It would turn two 4's into an 8 ohm load, or turn two 8's into a 16, which could then be put in parallel with another two 8's to get back to 8.)
I use one often to run more modern heads with my 4 ohm cabs setup as I can still get sufficient volume at 8 ohms. Means I can use every amp with every cab. Hell if you can make them cheap enough who knows paid 50 for mine in a nice sturdy metal box...

Assuming you did the math right on the combination of series/parallel to protect the amp for net impedance, you'll also need to do the power calcs to make sure you aren't over-powering individual drivers, as some folks have suggested. If you add that constraint, you should be able to come up with a combination that both protects the amp, and each driver.

You will be lucky to avoid a total 180 phase reversal on one set vs the rest. That could get very ugly for the odd ones out as they would get a extra shove in their opposite direction by the rest of the pack going the other way. Kablooey.

First all the cabs have to be wired + out.

Then all the linked amps have to be firing same way.

And your linking boxes have to be correct.

You should add in bits at a time to make sure each bit makes it louder. Take away a bit and add a different bit. Rinse and repeat until you are dead sure it's all in phase.

I remember the grateful dead in the 70's started doing things like with loads of speaker cabs and got a bit carried away. Phil Lesh's bass had a quadrophonic pickup and that led to a tower of bass cabs for each string.
Welcome to the Alembic Wall of Sound. :-) All the best with the experimenting. I'm planning to do some this summer when I get time to take my amps and cabs down to my mate's rehearsal studio.

Hi xnewyorka :)

Not funny! :(

I thought this was about:
"How to make my landlord angry" or
"Waking up the neighbours"

:D

More is always better! :woot: (avoid outphasing and don 't blow the 12' speakers)
Maybe it will "work" for the neighbours, when you set up by the pool? :hyper:
Don 't forget to post pics, before the cops arrest you!

may the bass be with you

The 12’s will be fine. You already know that you barely need to turn up your amp to make it loud. Just use your ears.

I’ve run my 1000 watt Terror Bass through some combination of 1x12, two 1x12 and my 610 for well over 5 years and have never had an issue because using the volume control is easy. Common sense is all you need to be successful.

Most would say that it's not worth it... Especially people that went to school for it. I have an Ampeg V4B that I've been doing a demo with against and Ampeg Heritage SVT, a Mesa Strategy, and a Markbass SD1200, using two 4x8 Markbass cabs, two 4x10 Markbass cabs, a Heritage 810e cab, an SVT 212 cab, and a Mesa Power House 412 cab.

With the exception of the Markbass SS head, they will each run at least 4 cabinets of any type that I have... and furthermore, through slaving, could all run anything.

But this is the old "bigger is better theory", and in this case, just not worth it. You'll exceed anything that you're capable of noticing... and efficiency and quality are more important than mass in this case. You'd be better off with one Mesa 210 cab than 40 radio shack cabs.

In short, I have two studios and all this gear, and I wouldn't bother... although like you... I do think it would be cool!

My justification was to try out gear and discover what I prefer. But I like doom/stoner metal, and so I thought the two (or three, or four) went hand in hand in creating the obligatpry “wall.” It was pretty cool A/B’ing a couple of the heads at a time and experimenting. The silverware rattled in the drawers, dishes in their cabinets, lamps rattled off tables. I also live in a decent sized home on a large lot, and I’m married to a good woman.

And then I sold/traded most of the this away for a nice Pbass and a couple matching 15” Black Widows and two separate single cabs. I decided an instrument that felt perfect in my hands and with the thump I wanted was a fair exchange, and now I can move the whole rig in my Camry.

I can still rattle cutlery and displace home decor if I desire just like before, and it sounds better and more focused when I do.

But the wall phase was fun while it lasted.
