I want to get started playing the bass fiddle, Bluegrass style. I play the piano, read music, and have decent rhythm, but know very little about the bass.

I don't want to spend too much, but I do want to buy something that I can use for the duration without getting dissatisfied. I'd also like something with a decent resale value if possible. My goal is to attend local jams and enjoy myself, nothing major.

I'm hoping that I can learn to play without formal music lessons. My son plays the fiddle and guitar so I'm hoping he can get me started.

I'm female and 5'4" tall. My grip isn't strong. Would a 3/4 be my best bet? What quality and price range should I consider? Where should I look to find my instrument?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Chernott,

Welcome. Please take a minute to fill out your profile. Knowing where you are will help folks direct you for good places to look for a bass.

There are a number of useful videos to get you started with bluegrass thumping but nothing -- NOTHING -- will replace the value of lessons, even if you only take a couple to learn proper technique, posture, etc. A teacher can also help determine if your bass is set up properly. Your size and your grip won't work against you if you use proper form, but an incorrect approach can be painful.
