I'll never buy a new bass again, used is the way to go for sure.
Fretlines, that's a total oxymoron for me, visually and functionally. Side dots should be more than enough, play on those lines and you'll be off pitch 75% of the time. Ymmv
Try as many as you can, each one is as different as the next. You'll eventually find one that feels right.

Totally agree. I was really hesitant to try out a bass without fretlines but once I got one, it worked out just fine. The side dots are more than enough to judge where the other "Frets" are at.

You have to use your ear for fine adjustment, but I had to do the same thing on a fretless bass with the fret lines. When you're playing fretless, even with your finger staying in the same spot, you can adjust the pitch just by shifting weight around on your finger. That is why those fret lines aren't so fool proof. If you have to use your ear anyway, may as well go all the way IMHO.
