I have a new build incoming in a couple months. I decided to have a custom neck made opting for a Roasted Maple neck instead of a finished maple. Who has kept their Roasted Maple raw? Or should I use some Tru-Oil to coat it?

I have a raw roasted maple Warmoth neck with a Macassar ebony fingerboard. It’s the nicest feeling neck I have of my 8 basses. The allure for me of a roasted maple is that it didn’t need a finish. I Love a raw neck.

I’d play the one you bought some without a finish and see if you like it. It doesn’t need a finish unless you want to put one on. I wish all the necks I had were raw roasted maple.

Nice!n you will like the weight and feel...I left mine raw on my 32" roasted maple neck..I put some Warwick wax on it every once in a while...I did just ordered a flame maple 30" neck w/Bubinga fretboard and I plan on putting one coat of Tru-oil on the back of the neck and headstock here is a cool vid

I have a Fender Roasted Maple neck...I believe it is lighter ...Wish I had got the jazz bass neck , for the profile.
But Roasted Maple is a lovely, light ,resonant neck

Not me just a cool video i found when I was looking for info on Tru-Oil for Roasted Maple necks I'm pretty sure the results are more dramatic on a flame roasted Maple neck though with Tru-Oil...If you get a nice grained regular Roasted Maple neck I bet it would look great also

Do you know what the weight split is between body and neck?


I'm planning a P bass build - targeting a balanced 8.5 lbs or less. wenge/wenge is desirable, but I don't want to sacrifice weight and balance.

It doesn't feel unbalanced. I usually play it with a wide strap that doesn't slip so it would have some resistance to headstock dropping, but I've got other obviously neck-heavy instruments and this is not one of them.

You'd probably save a pound off the weight by using ultralights instead of those big hunk-of-metal Schallers.

I have another question for those who have built P/J Warmoths. The top rout cavity for the warmoth (and the Fender) looks like it is designed for 2 pots and one jack. Since I'll be building a P/J, mine is having a side jack hole drilled, and I'll be using 3 CTS pots. Will a full size CTS pot fit in the jack area? Or should I get a smaller pot to make sure it fits? Curious how others have attacked this. Thank you.

I think you might have to open up the rout channel a bit

My Am Performers pickguard hole for tone pot is just north of a normal precision bass pickguard and regular size pot will not fit in the channel where the Jack would be

Thanks for the reply. I bit the bullet and ordered a mini CTS to use for the tone pot. I now have a spare.

It should fit but I would call Warmoth just to double check if nobody chimes in that knows for sure

Did some neck swapping yesterday. Moved my roasted maple Jazz neck to my Dinky P and bought an Aerodyne Jazz neck for my Dinky J. I like the painted headstock and clean, no inlay look.

This leaves me an extra neck for my next project. Dang I wish Warmoth still made T-Bird shaped bodies...

Dang, I didn’t notice all the fingerprints on the headstock... I’d have wiped them off before picture time.
