Warwick advice.

I have both a Thumb and a SSII. They both cut through well. For cutting through loud guitars and drums I'd say the Thumb does a little better. Take in mind, a Thumb and a SSII DO NOT sound alike. They have considerably different tones. A Thumb has a very mid-heavy, farty, nasally, growly tone which is great for what it is but very one-dimensional (in my opinion). A SSII has a rounder tone and is more even across the frequency spectrum. It's tone, to me, sounds like a cross between a very modern Jazz bass, a Fodera (or the tone that most people would typically think of when they think Fodera, and a Thumb. Considerably more versatile due to the pickup placement. It has a very tight, defined low end, a pronounced midrange (that's nowhere near as nasally and farty as a Thumb), and a very smooth and sweet top end.

Missed that first time through, looks like I might be heading SSII (pr perhaps corvette). I do love the sound of thumbs, but would like versatility as well.

it really comes down to which sound you like more. However, I will point out that to get the most out of a SS2, you got to change the pickups/preamp. My thing turned into an absolute monster once I did just that.

Cheers mate, just wondering.. What did you swap into your SSII? Also, love Alex K's tone, one of my favourites (especially recorded).

IMHO thumbs get lost in the mix due to 2 things.
1) sound man turns it down
2) played through ampegs thumbs get lost. Another amp can handle it better.

Actually, that's probably a good point. Whilst I like Fieldy's tone, in that video, I couldn't hear much of it except the click clack coming through, unless it was a quieter part.

By the way, how much would I be looking at for a used SSII 5 string? Preferably wenge neck and early hand made. And how often do they come up on the market?

I don't think you'll have an issue cutting through with any of those choices. It really comes down to the tone you want and the ergonomics of each, IMO.

Used SSIIs pop up on ebay every so often. I'd also check the Warwick forum's classifieds section.

here's a video of us playing a local gig. I'm playing a warwick corvette fna jazzman through and ampeg SVT 3 pro through an ampeg 8x10. the recordings only through a little mic but you get the idea.

Hey man, couldn't hear much of the bass (crap comp speakers prob don't help). Checked out your other track on there (delusion) though and gotta a better jist, sounds pretty good man.

Freakin sweet songs by the way.

Did think about one, but they generally sound too bright/typical 80's slap for me.

However.. I went in today to play a Dirty Blonde 5'er, Streamer $$ 5'er (no SSII's unfortunantly) and a couple others.

Walked out with the least likely one.. A used '94, Neck Thru, 5 string Warwick... THUMB!

Plays fantastic, so fast and smooth, such an easy neck to play compared to the new Ovangkol's IMO. Sounds brilliant as well. Didn't like the feel of the Dirty Blonde overall, they're VERY lightweight and consequently (IMO anyway), don't have that solid sturdy warwick feel to them. A nice sounding bass (very bright), but I figured I could get closer to that tone with my Sterling than I would be able to get to the thumb anyway.

Sounded great through an Ampeg stack in the shop (and I don't really like Ampeg much at all), then took it home and plugged it into the Bergie + V8 stack and OMG. Incredible sound.

Looks like i'll just keep saving those pennies for a SSII!
