I'm looking at trading up from MIM Jazz, to either a Warwick Corvette STD 4 (bubinga), or Double Buck 4 (red) or 5 (black).
My main reason for the trade up is to get better sound, at less hum/noise. I'm looking for something that is really great to play and learn with now, but that I can also continue to grow with.
How "clean" a sound do the STD and $$ have? I've played them at the local shop and haven't really noticed any real hum to speak of; but there is so much background noise/music going on, that I really can't tell from the amps I've been playing on (trying to play mostly on comprable combos to the one I currently have).
Does the active $$ have any real advantages over the passive STD 4, or visa versa? Actually, Ive seemed to like the more passive bass sound so far, again mainly because it seems a bit cleaner (except for my current MIM Jazz).
Is it better to stick with a 4 string bass early on; or is OK to move up to a 5 string before you've pretty much "mastered" the 4 string?
Some of the styles I like to play are: blues, reggae, contemporary Christian, Jazz, R & B and some easier Rock/Fold type sounds (and some slap, and would like to start to learn Tapping): will either/both of these Warwicks work well for these?
I actually like the heavier weight of the STD, but are there any cons to the lighter weight of the $$ ?
Next, I've found a $$ for $999 (same price for either the 4 string or the 5 string), and a Corvette STD 4 for $1039 at the new local GC; are these good prices &/or how much can I expect GC to come down on these prices?
I've not purchased from a GC before. Can I expect that anyone at GC can set up bass properly; or should I take to another luthier?
Any other recommendations for another "clean" great sounding bass that is a blast to play and learn on, in the price range of the STD or $$ ; or any other insights to help me with this next bass purchase?
I keep going out and playing basses, but there are only about a dozen basses in this price range available for me to play--and most of those are Fenders, which I have really liked (noisy pups and pots aside); but the Warwicks have really caught my attention.
