Warwicks---Yay or Nay?

I have a '97 Thumb 4 neck thru. It's made from an absolutely sick piece of bubinga, it just looks incredible. The thing is built like a truck, I put a dent in the ceiling without scratching the headstock. The sound is just awsome, especially when I run just the neck pickup and back of the treble just a bit, really kicks you in the jimmy. The down side is that I can't really play it standing up, can't hardly reach the first fret. That would be enough to make some people sell it but I know they don't make them like they used to so it's a keeper. If I want to be comfortable when standing up I'll play a jazz bass and just stare at my freakin sick lookin Warwick.

I played a $3000 Warwick the other day and the playability wasn't too good, as a matter of fact that's the reason I didn't even plug it in.

You know, this reminds me of something that drives me crazy. I fell in love with the thumb bass the first time I played one here in a local shop. I eventually bought one off ebay. I love it.

Now, I've noticed when I make a trip to New Orleans and go to the local Guitar Center, most of the basses they have hanging on the walls, including the $2500 thumbs, are always in ****ty shape. Not cosmetically, but just things like high action, bowed necks, loose pots, no batteries, etc. I've always thought about how many people would be turned off to these basses, not becaues they were crappy instruments, but because they might FEEL like crappy instruments because no one is taking care of them or making any effort to get the bass set up and in good playable shape. I mean, it seems ridculous to think you could sell a bass for $3000 if it plays like ****, but the idiots at guitar center seem to think they can.

Now I'm not saying this is the case necessarily with By-Tor. The comment just reminded me of something I've noticed. It's something I think people should consider if they are genuinely shopping for a bass. Any bass will feel like a piece if it's not set up or taken care of.

and the other moral is, Guitar center is a great place to waste hours noodling on a hundred different intruments, but you'd have to be crazy to spend any substantial sum of money there.

as for the neck lenght, get a short strap and try it at about chest-height. if its still too far, then your arm is really short.

Have a question for you guys, recently picked up a mint '05 Corvette 5 and it has the Just a Nut 2 (I believe). It is missing the set screws to actually adjust the nut up and down, and I will need this function because I will be switching to heavier gauge strings shortly. Should I buy a new Just a Nut 2, or take the opportunity and upgrade to a JAN 3? If so, is there a huge difference between the brass and synthetic material (hopefully not opening up a can o' worms with this one!)?

I would get the brass III personally. I have the II on my Dolphin and am considering getting the brass III myself.
