Was 1988 any different??

1988-1993 there were still some semblances of traditional values. No smart phones, every hot girl didn't think she deserved a billionaire who looks like Tom Brady, etc... Most of you guys all got married before smart phones, online dating, and social media so you have absolutely no idea how hard it is. My mom looks like Raquel Welch and dad got her making scraps in the 80's, my aunt looks like Rebecca DeMornay and my uncle got her making scraps in the 90's, my grandma looks like Faye Dunaway and grandpa got her with nothing in the 60's....

damn bro you got a sister?

Born in '57, grew up in the 60's/early 70's, full time pro from '77-'85 (club circuit was crazy and fun ... for a time). Met my wife in '86 ,got married and became a Dad (2x). Dropped back to local gigging on weekends. Popular culture from then on became another world for me as I focused on my professional career in Tech and raised my family.

I pretty much had a great time in all the decades I've been alive and am still gigging like mad after retiring from my straight world work life. I had a great time then ('88-'93) but I'm focused on having a great time NOW and don't have a ton of nostalgia for the past.

gotta just keep movin forward

1988 was completely different:
  • threat of global destruction was the backdrop
  • certain groups targeted by cops, feared by the bourgeois
  • some popular music was good, but most was crap
  • clueless old people driving the bus
  • technology was changing rapidly and unsettling everything
  • unwise rich people were ruining the economy for others
  • a terrifying diseases ran rampant
  • Russia was doing F'd up things to the rest of the world
completely different
You get the Irony Award! Well done

Didn't Gene Simmons state something like 1964 to 1979 as the best 15 year period in music as there were more bands, more hits and the best songs, never equalled within any 15 year since?
Gene Simmons could say kittens are cute, and my opinion of kittens would be forever negatively influenced.

That might be true if you only pay attention to rock music. I mean, I don't agree but I'm willing to concede the perception of it.

There's been so much invention and creativity in music since then, decade after decade. Y'all don't like it though because it's not rock. Which is fine, we like what we like. But even if rock music peaked 50 years ago, music as a whole hasn't.

My personal tastes in music and musicianship in general lead me to believe that the Fusion Movement, perhaps starting with Miles Davis and his Star Chamber, followed by giants like Billy Cobham, Jean-Luc Ponty, and winding up in the hands of John Scofield represented the pinnacle of the art. I wish it would return.
