Was Sting Primarily A Bass Player...?

I saw Sting perform at the San Diego hall where the orchestra performed back in 1999. It was a pre-tour performance when Brand New Day came out. Excellent concert. I enjoyed the traditional tunes as well as the new material. Manu Katche on drums.

I read that Sting got the early P when he was in NYC. There was going to be a photo shoot and they/he wanted a cooler looking bass than whatever he was using so someone went out and bought the P. Guess he liked it.

Yeah, I read that also. A clip for the "Demolition Man" film from memory.

Sting had two replicas made of his '57 P bass for touring IIRC.

I'm pretty sure those are the same bass. The wear patterns look the same except for the lower part that has more sunburst in the first picture, and has been worn away by the time the second picture was taken.

The picture with the pickguard is quite old, Sting is clearly much much younger, while the second one is clearly a much newer picture.

And neither the 1957 or the 1955 have a pickguard anymore.

I believe you are correct. I can't find a pic of him playing the 1955 as I'm sure he doesn't much.

Sting is a great bass player that was the Ace in Quadrophenia and he was also reported to be friendly with Jaco. If Jaco liked him that's good enough for me. Wish he would put down that dirty Fender and play that white Spector again. Much better bass.

That white Spector got pretty dirty on the one tour it was used, and he doesn't have it anymore. It's in the R&RHOF.

Sting's white spector bass was my single favorite item in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

Sting performed solo guitar with broody vocals versions of Roxanne and Message in a Bottle at one of the Secret Policeman's Ball concerts ages ago.

I thought those were far better interpretations than the versions done by the full band.
