I'll say this again, I've never understood the big huge thing with "how does that fuzz respond to active bass"....not to take away from your question. But I just don't get it is all. I've almost always used active basses woth every dirt pedal I've ever had. And I've never had issues. Maybe it's just my ear. But I've never played a fuzz or other dirt pedal that didn't really respond favorable to active electronics.

My active gibson rd artist kills my ehx black russian,maybe because the bass puts out too much volume and lows.my tomkat bender gets noisy as hell with active basses.
thats why i was curious about the RP.
Btw good to know it works just fine with actives!

I actually really liked the SP's high midrange. Really harsh and nasty.

It would be nice if they if they always too the time to equalize the volume on comparissons or even demos between settings. Louder usually seems better and with some speakers I think louder is better. My current cab seems to have a wake up point where the sound seems best.

Oh dude, I want your bass. Daaaannngggg. So sweeeeee....I miss my Black Russian too. By both Vick and especially EHX, a sovtek. That thing ruled.

Yeah that’s a good comparison actually. I was A/B’ing the SP and RP last night at practice and the SP can get much more aggressive and cold, super loud and feedback whereas the RP can get loud, but it stays more refined, smoother, more liable to mix with the mix than to completely cut through it. Although it can actually cut. I would say that my Civil Unrest cut better than the RP does, however, the RP keeps it bottom end together much better. So it cuts in a different way. It’s not quite as tearing sounding. Or ripping. However it does rip haha. Am I making sense!? It’s hard to describe. It’s like the RP cuts, it kicks, it screams, but it does so in a refined manner compared to say the SP or some other muffs I’ve tried. It’s more polite yet has its own way of being a beast.


Also, the SP feeds back like a unadulterated beast how I set it with my setup whereas the RP stays nice n quiet. I don’t know exactly what Tripps did to the this muff circuit, but damn does it work.

I've been using the RP on a lot of recordings. It sounds so good in the mix, makes everything sound huge.

As much as I dig the RP it has also rekindled my love of the Swollen Pickle. The high end aggressive nastiness of the SP sounds so good in a mix with one guitar. I had been using a Pharaoh with the band for awhile but the SP just makes everything sound meaner.

NOICE! Definitely eager to see this comparison, you're awesome!!! This is probably the most important comparison seeing as how this is the inspiration for the Russian Pickle but I'm also curious to hear how this thing compares to the SUF Civil War and W&C TFR as well if anyone has experience with these.

Okay, it showed up the other day, and I haven't had that much of a chance to really mess with it, but I can tell you that I can get it to sound very, very close to the one I bought new in 1994. Like, amazingly close. It's impressive. The Russian Pickle seems to be a little more controlled (quieter, a little more polite) than the Sovtek is. Monday evening we have a rehearsal, so I am going to do a video comparison then (4003 in standard tuning, Thunderbird in D-standard through an SVT Classic head and cab, recorded with a Zoom Q2N) so stay tuned. In the meantime, here are a few pictures!

Sounds very close to my TFR according to all the demos I've heard (still think TFR sounds slightly better, at least according to demos). Love the vintage russian muffs, my favorite fuzz for bass, so that's good!

I've had the Swollen Pickle years ago, but could never get it totally right for my band, plus the volume was super sensitive on that thing. It was often just ground shaking loud or got lost in the mix. Never had that problem with my TFR, and I bet Russian Pickle does it well too.

Anyone AB'ed TFR and Russian Pickle?

I used the Swollen Pickle, and yeah, definitely a sensitive volume control. I usually set the fuzz low and the volume high to hit my amp's pre with a hotter signal. I did find that with small adjustments it could be either inaudible, or louder than everything else in the band.
