I came for the clamp shots but stayed for the old electric grinder

I almost wrote "There has been enough clamp shots. It's nice to see something else for a change." but realized the depths I was getting myself into and decided to let go on that one.

And now I'm wondering what can be done with this stuff. I'm reluctant to just throw it away.

Stuff it into paper egg cartons and soak it down with melted gulf wax. Makes excelent fire starters.

First bit of side glued on. The clamp needs support to stay in place.

And after all those were in place, I proceeded to attach the sides. The sides consist of many pieces, because of the octagonal shape, but also because there'll be gaps for the preamp etc.

All those bits of side need to be the exact same width. Given how prone I am to inaccuracy, I had the store cut strips of plywood for me on a very accurate and specialised machine. This took a lot of time, as the operator wssn't sure of the best way to do this, and went to find a more experienced colleague.

But yesterday I discovered that they messed it up. The first strip I cut pieces from, didn't have a constant width. So now I have to break off the pieces I glued in so far. I was very angry.

Lessons learnt:
1. Even a very accurate and specialised machine is only as accurate as its operator.
2. Not only always check your work. Check the work of others too.
3. Go to a different store.

I feel your pain. I once needed to make a template for a mirrored splashback in my kitchen. Not having access to a table saw at that time I got the saw operator at my local big box hardware store to cut it out for me. I stupidly didn't check his work, and to this day there's a 20mm gap above the mirror to remind me of other people's ineptitude!

So after that experience, I went to a different store. I bought different wood and had it cut to strips:

It's still not perfect, but as long as I pay attention to where it's too wide or too narrow, I can make it work.
Of course the best solution would be to have a table saw, but I currently don't do enough woodworking to justify the expense. And I have trouble finding a makerspace around here.


So to work we went.

And the first new bit of side has been glued in. I made a few extra clamp shots, because I can.

Very high in fibre.
