I usually ask the client, since they are the ones paying for it. Since tuxes and gown are an additional expense for the band, I will usually roll that into our quote. Otherwise, it's ties and blazers for the guys and cocktail dress for the girls. If they say it's OK to dress casual, make sure to clarify. Casual can be a golf shirt and khakis, Hawaiian shirts with shorts, jeans and T-shirt to all points in between.
Talk to the client before to avoid any mixups or unclear expectations.

We can switch up the ties and kerchiefs easily to different colors for a new look or to match the decor, and our female lead has several different colored formals.

Whatever you do, DO NOT do vests! You'll only be a straw hat and a armband away from looking like a barber shop quartet!
