Weezer?

I've never had the pleasure. I was called by Rivers before Scott got the gig, he was interested in me possibly joining the band. THis was maybe, I dunno, 6 years back?

Interesting! Like the whole Les Claypool auditions for Metallica thing. As a fan of Weezer and your work, I have to wonder at the possibilities of that collaboration. Scott is great at what he does but when I hear a song like "Pork and Beans", I can almost imagine you tearing it up (tastfully of course).

I don't think there's much collaboration going on in Weezer. Rivers Cuomo rules that band with an iron hand. Which is cool because it's his gig and he worked hard to put himself in that position.

I'd like to believe that every bass player adds a bit of "flava" to everything they do, no matter how controlled the environment. Maybe I'm just being dellusional. After all I am a guy who basically ripped off Bootsy's bassline to Super Bad (pre movie) for a Alterna-Hard-Rock band I was helping!:hiding:

I'm sure Justin would have brought what he could to Weezer, but for the most part, it sounds like Rivers has the bassists stick rigidly to the root, so it's tough to inject some personality into the music under those circumstances. And that's no indictment of Rivers. That's the way he hears his music, that's what he needs to make it happen, so be it.

I'd love to respectfully dissagree here!:D
I'm a pretty big weezer fan so I feel I should give my 2c! Although I do agree with the fact that rivers is the band leader In every way, you cant just diss Scott Shriner like that because the dude is a pretty awesome player! I wouldnt only say he's necessarily a "root only" player, and I believe he amnages to add quite a bit of flava in a lot of the songs!you should maybe give maladroit , the man has some pretty cool lines there!

I'm not saying anything bad about Scott Shriner at all. He's a very good bassist, I'm sure. But let's face it...what do all of Weezer's hits have in common? Lots of root notes and everyone playing in total support to Rivers at all times. If I got the call for that gig, I'd do it, too, and be really happy as I go to the bank and cash my checks. But it's not a gig for someone who already has a career and enough FU money to turn it down if their creative needs aren't being met.
