Weird Discoloration Under a Student's Fingers

I was talking with another bassist this weekend and he asked a question that has me stumped and, to be honest, a bit worried.

His student is developing what appears to be blood "blisters" or "clots" far down beneath the skin on both hands; i.e., fingers that touch the strings. Apparently there are no external blisters, no skin splits or tears, etc. All I could think of was that perhaps his student is pressing too hard, but on both hands? I suggested that ask the student to see his doc and have him take a look (e.g., diabetes?).

Any thoughts?
