Yeah yeah its not an actual Rick. Just thought I'd beat you to that point.
 
It's most likely just duct tape set where the inlay markers on the fretboard are. I've seen some local guitarists around here do that. That way you can feel where you're positioned as you run your hand up the neck. I've been thinking about doing it with electrical tape to my VM jazz bass. Would look pretty cool with the black inlays and all

i know a bass player that does this too. it helps him to look less at his fretboard and in some situations feel when he cant see in the dark lit stage.
 
It's funny how even with a P pup in the right position, it still sounds like a Ric.


+1. I was thinking the samel thing. Even with the P pickup the bass seemed to have Ric growl. So maybe this bass proves sound is more in the strings/neck/body then the electronics.
