weird problem with bartolini pickup

So i got this bartolini Jazz pickup, I install it into my jazz in the neck position.

and it sounds like this:

the notes are "choked off"

Any ideas?

ive messed about with pickup height a bit, and it doesnt seem to do anything.

The back of the pickup is very weird, it has a copper back, with 4 connectors:

1 2 3---4

wires so 3 and 4 are connected together, and 1 and 2 are the leads coming out of it.

I disconnected 3 and 4 and then I got no signal out of 1 and 2, so im guessing its 2 coils in series?

its a jazz pickup, does anyone know what model it is? im pretty sure its some sort of jazz stack or split pickup.

Sounds like maybe a loose connection in the input jack. I've actually found that input jacks are often a source of cutting out problems and not all of them are equally reliable. You'll also want to be sure that there isn't any shielding rubbing against the cable tip. Double check your grounding. Also be aware that Barts have a pretty distintive tone that may sound like "choking" compared to more open sounding pups such as seymour duncans. Bartolinis are about the mids to my ears - they are my pickups of choice.

Bart used to do a quad coil in a J shape, the 9W range if I remember correctly, sounds like it might be that. Could you post a pic pls?

YES!!!

thats the one it says "neck 9W5 75-L" on the back, it looks like somebody just scratched it on with a knife.

I didnt mention it because I didnt know it was the model number, since its not on the bart site.

the funny thing is, it doesnt seem to have the choking problem when its not mounted on my bass, it only does it when in the control cavity......

how do you know it's working when not in the bass?
I haven't seen a 9w pickup in real life, but some bart pickups are quite deep. If you're having to screw it in real tight, is it possible you're digging into the pickup wire going from pickup route to pots?

if i put it above the strings rather than below it, it does not seem to have the problem.

It is possible that im digging into the wire, I will check it, the routing in my jazz is very deep though so it should be ok
