I was on a gig with Dallas Metropolitan Winds about ten years ago with Noel Johnston, who is in the same Dallas circle as Wes Stephenson and Mark Lettieri. I should clarify that I got that gig on a personal relationship with the conductor; I would not be able to hang competitively with guys of this caliber.

That’s quite a scene in North Texas!

Actually now that I recall that gig, Stockton Helbing was on drums. Another guy I’m not likely to be gigging with on my own merits.

We did a tune that had a bass solo on my electric upright, but I only used my left hand. Stockton used his sticks to drum on the strings and create the tone. It was cool and in fact not our idea - it was that way in the composer notes.
