Whammy Use

Hey guys,

I have seen that many of you have whammys on your boards and many of the "stars" do as well. Do you guys have clips of how you are using them, or where can i go to hear some guys using them. I am aware of how JC used one with Tool, but i was looking for other examples.

These Arms Are Snakes. Brian Cook uses his as an octaver a lot as well as some sweeps. I use the hell outta mine personally.

I use to have one, but I didn't use it in a band setting at all. I ended up selling it. It took up too much board space for me. I also felt it had bad tracking, but I think you can get a mod for it to track better. I may be wrong though.

It's weird, two pedals I've been most unhappy with (Whammy IV and DL4) are always on the 'stars' boards.

I'm thinking of buying a Digitech Whammy 4, in order to play some riffs at a higher register, but I don't know if it's worth the money....

Its worth the money if you are gonna use it a lot....... Some of the harmony modes are silly but a lot of them sound great. Also you can get a used one for like 100 bucks.

Depends on how you use them.

Well not really- the POG doesn't Whammy at all. The HOG can. The point of the Whammy is the sound you get when transitioning between notes- an octaver like the POG will give you the higher notes, but not the transition.

True it doesn't "whammy" but both can be used to acquire a full wet 1 OCT up, 2 OCT up, 1 OCT, 2 OCT below (POG 2) and a semi Harmony with 1 OCT up or 1 OCT down. If that's all you're looking for, you're good to go with either.

I had and sold the Whammy IV twice because the heel down position in a few cents out of tune from your dry signal with the pedal engaged, calibrating did not fix this. It is really annoying if you split your signal or use a blender. IMHO...YMMV...etc etc....

Removing the rubber pads below the expression pedal fixes this^. Happened to me. The Whammy rules, nothing can do what this does. It is an instrument in itself. I just put a boost after it and all is well

i've used my xp-100 whammy quite a bit in songs. mainly used it for the 5th^oct^ setting and the +1oct bends.

Bootsy uses one pretty often. From vids I've seen (like the Superbad soundtrack sessions), he had a WH-1 on his board. Actually bought my whammy IV because of him on Praxis's Mutatis Mutandis. Funkiest sound ever might be envelope filter >> whammy -1 oct. The big draw of the whammy type over other pitchshifters is obvious: the expression pedal.

Starting around 3:16, Invalid Link Removed. He rocking that uni/-1 like a wah with the filter, which gets less subtle later in the song.

In any case, I've now ditched the whammy family in favor of the Eventide PitchFactor with an expression pedal. Better tracking, way more options for intervals and clean mixing, etc.

I bought that cd when it came out. That along with Zillatron. Bill Laswell and bootsy are hero's and Bootsy's use of the whammy is great. Use it as an effect..the key word being effect, so dont worry about tracking or slight intonation issues..just use the damned thing.

This is probably just me, but when I had a Whammy IV, it just seemed to have bad tracking and didn't play very well. I would advise trying to find a Bass Whammy. Works the same way and sounds better IMO, but it will take some hunting skills and alot of cash.
