Not really a horror story but I regret replacing the original pickups in my Carvin LB75F with EMG DCs and BQC. After I realized the error in judgement I replaced the original Carvin J pickups and put a pair of empty soapbar pickup shells over them to fill the space. I also replaced the original Carvin electronics.

I got a Tony Franklin fretless pj and swapped out the fretless neck for an American special. That was a great decision. Then I swapped out the pickups and the bridge for no good reason whatsoever. I ended up selling it because I needed the money, not because I didn’t like it any more, but the mods added nothing and only made it harder to sell.

The worst thing I did to a bass was defret with inadequate tools, apply epoxy poorly and route in a new pickup without any practice. Fortunately it was nearly free garbage to begin with and I just chucked it.
The worst thing that I actually regret is using duratex to paint a bass I was reclaiming in an effort to have a matching bass and cab (a very bright custom color). It looks ok and is easy enough to play, but the texture is unlike anything I've ever played and it means I'll have to do it again with something more traditional if I ever decide to sell it.

Back in the 70's we'd sometimes just throw away the original parts. "Vintage" was for wines, not basses back then.
Having a pickguard made with too many holes in it...
Assuming it was just no good for slapping, I paid to have my first decent bass de-fretted.

After years of modding and thousands of dollars lost my main regret is all of them. If you don’t like the way your bass sounds find something else that fits the bill. Basically everything you could want is currently available.

Thinking I have any business doing a home refinishing job. I must be on my 5th or 6th mistake. WHEN WILL I LEARN?!?!?!
Using hammer and chisels to fit a soapbar into a J route. It was a POS bass, not anything nice, a pawn shop Lotus back in the day. But that cream EMG bar definitely made an improvement in tone.

I had a PJ Mustang with maple neck, but wanted a lighter body. Found a SS Jag bass for cheap, planned on putting the neck and pickups from the Mustang in there.
Got the pickups in the Jag, everything ready to go and ready for the neck and...the neck screws didn't line up.
Now I had piles of parts from two basses, neither of which I wanted anymore.
1980 ric 4003..new pickups, tuners, badass bridge.. got stolen 1990 but I had it insured at the time 
. Still have the solid koa 5 string I bought with the money and its a beauty.
