What about playing bass appeals to you?

For me it was like meeting my one true love, sounds corny but it's true. I played guitar for over thirty years and for all that time I was never satisfied, until I had a chance to play bass for a local youth concert. It was like BOOM, this is what I've been looking for!!!!!:hyper: Sometimes just hitting a certain note sends shivers up my spine, I love being able to lay back and groove along with the drummer. The only regret is not playing bass from the start, I would of been much happier!:D

1) I like rhythm - and like being part of it.
2) I actually *like* being a support player. Solos are for egos - groove is for musicians
3) I like control: And short of the drummer, no one controls a band like a bassist. Similarly, I know that a great bassist can really make a band - but a so-so band with a great guitar player is just... meh.

The sound -- I've always gravitated to the low end. Maybe b/c I was such a squeaky runt as a kid. Love that thump.

I LOVE locking in with a good drummer (like my current one) who loves locking in with a (reasonably good) bassist.

I like being the only one. Stage bands, garage bands, pit bands, pub bands, jazz combos -- I've been the only bass.

Finally, I like that there aren't that many of us and if you're pretty good, people want you.

The lower frequencies always intrigued me. And bass players always seemed like cool, laid-back dudes, real musicians, and a group I wanted to be a part of. When I started playing bass, my life finally took meaning, gave me a reason to wake up in the morning. It just felt "right". If I don't play bass, its gotten to the point of withdrawal. I get moody and start playing air bass all over. Besides that, I like everything else about bass too. :bassist:

(Edited) This. I get gigs left and right, because people NEED a good bass player. That, and locking in with the drummer is one of the best moments I've experienced.

In addition to bass, I play guitar, a bit of piano and I once played clarinet too. Bass is what I'm best at. I seems to come much more naturally.

To me, bass is like the offensive line of a football (American) team. Nobody mentions it unless it's done something wrong. In the tapestry that is a musical ensemble piece, bass is what keeps it all together, it's the heartbeat of a song.

When you hear old country, folk or blues and that bass is right up front you cant miss it makes the band!Take the bass out of any cash song and there is nothing left its empty!And anyway you are always in demand!!

when i was young i tried guitar and couldnt do it, i tried drums and i was ok, and then i picked up bass... something in my head just clicked and i felt comfortable and that i could play what i wanted and sound how i wanted, in my high school years i went from being a non existant musician to being one of the best... i only started playing when i was 15 im only 19 now and i still have plenty of time to get even better :)

Consoling yourself that you are an unsung hero while they all squeal out of the parking lot with carloads of red-hot women...

Laughing quietly at next week's rehearsals when the crabs outbreaks are reported...
