What am I??? Christmas fruitcake??

quote edited by mod...

anyway on topic... don't waste your time. If the guitarist wants you to teach his GF bass then charge her/him. Why should you do your replacements any favors?

Finally!! Someone understands me! I'm not bashing metal by any means.

I just cannot get overthe fact that he praised my bass playing and then has thw audacity to ask me to teach his girlfriend to play bass so she can take my place!!!

he starts talking about starting a band with another one of our buddies who is completely metalcore Avenged Sevenfold, screamo, etc. ... Well then, my friend goes and buys a Schecter Solo 6 Hellraiser with EMG pickups. ... So we're talking on the phone about a week ago and we both decided that the metalcore thing is really not what we're into, because our influences are more classic and actually more creative. ... So, we get to talking and he says "I'm buying a BOSS Metalcore pedal" ... so he lied and is now suddenly into metalcore again. What the bleep??

I don't know, man, sounds to me like you decided that "the metalcore thing is not what [the both of you are] into." He, it seems, has other ideas -- and influences. Bummer for you, but if you don't want to be in their metalscreamoaggropunkfunkadelicacore band, then don't. Go play what you want to and find people who actually want to do it with you rather than try to Jedi Mind Trick your buddy into believing that who he really wants to be is JimmyAce FrehleyPage.

If you don't like the music then don't be in the band...simple as that, bro. I get offers from friends and people on myspace/facebook all the time asking if I want to be in their thrash/death/black metal bands. I dig Mudvayne and enjoy MANY metal artists (Demon Hunter is a particular favorite) but that doesn't mean I wanna bang out some basslines for death metal.

Best part about being a bassist is that you CAN be picky about what genre band you want to play in :D

That's not how it was at all. I was perfectly willing to do the metalcore thing BEFORE he decided for us to form our own band. I didn't want to, but I was willing to, just for the chance to play music, of ANY form.

All along, from last summer up until he bought the Schecter, he was definitely intent on forming a JimmyAce PageFrehley type band with me because Led Zeppelin was both of our favorite bands, and he liked the creative/folkish rock side of them, and the guitar sound of Page, and I was really attracted to the bass playing of both Jones and Simmons. That's the kind of playing I'm used to. Much more melodic, moving stuff, whereas in metal/metalcore where the bass isn't as prominent and doesn't play as big a role and basically just follows the chords and doesn't have any real purpose other than holding down the bottom, which is not what I want to do. Both Jones and Simmons were MUCH more creative than that.

Give her some lessons. Then pull an Axl, and Rocket Queen her ass. Then you can go back to being the bassist.
I would like to add that there are some metal bassist that aren't buried in the mix, that actually stand out. And I personally don't think of Gene Simmons as a great bass player. Not saying that he's bad, for I have no room to talk.

I wouldn't get too PO'd about it. Granted, he could have thought of a better door sign for this thread but I don't think he really hates metal or thinks metalheads are stupid.

I think what he meant to use as a title was:
Stupid bad friend who lied to me about the band!

That seems to be more of the problem; not that metalheads are stupid.

Umm...teaching the girlfriend bass: If you konw enough about music to be teaching someone else how to play, then you need to be paid. If the boyfriend wants you to teach, then he pays you for it. The other way this could work out is that you end up spending enough one-on-one tune with the girlfriend that you win her away from him and take her. That will end your friendship and probably isn't worth it...but it's definitely a possible option.

You can always just tell your friend that you arent interested in that type of music. If that means that you pull out of the band, oh well. If that means that the band changes its musical style to one you like better, then all is well, id say.

This kind of reminds me of that time my drummer wanted me to start a post-hardcore neo-classical country-metal group with him... boy did i dodge a bullet declining that offer :p

You guys are misunderstanding me. It's not that I don't like metal/metalcore. I do. I just really don't want to play it. I don't mind playing Alice In Chains type metal. They're more metal to me than grunge honestly.

My main beef is how he's praised me as a bass player and said "oh you'd be great" blah blah, etc, etc and then turns around and wants me to teach hos GIRLFRIEND bass so she can play bass in the band and I can play rhythm.

What's wrong with Nada Surf?

The only honorable thing to do would be to ask a mod to amend the title or just delete the thread. You've clearly offended a large group of us here. "Stupid *insert genre-specific fans here*" without following it up with some humor and sarcasm can only be seen as an intentional attemp to offend.

As for your predicament, get over it. Your friend wants some booty, obviously not from you. Take it or leave it, that's how it goes.

I changed the title. I didn't know I was going to "offend" so many people.

Jeez, grow up.

Yeah man I'd be done with this big time.

You're into more of the classic rock /with a little bit of hard rock thrown in, so play that. Agree to disagree and move on. Just because you like one thing and he wants to do something else doesn't mean the friendship has to end.

As for teaching the girlfriend, that is most definitely a slap in the face, intentional or otherwise. I would however be willing to teach her to play for whatever the going rate for lessons is in your area. The extra bucks in your pocket wouldn't hurt plus you may find she's not even really interested in playing bass and she's only doing it 'cause her boyfriend wants her to. However she may get into playing bass in which case you now have a steady flow of extra income.

BTW stealling your buddy's girl is not the best plan either even if she is hot. Just more unwanted drama which will lead to who knows what. Of course if she decides she wants you over him he will probably go around spreading bad juju about you in your local music scene, which could cost you some potentially valuable gigs.

I think just heading off and doing your own thing in a style you like is the best solution overall.

I only read this thread because the title was changed.
fruit cake is yummy.

@OP
This is only your first and (probably not) second bands.

You should divorce your ideas of worthy friendship from your ideas of worthy band mates. Conflating them is a good way to lose both.

Move on and try out for other bands, Eventually you will develop a sense for who is worth investing your time.

Just don't get involved with his metalcore band. That's all there is to it. Let him teach his GF bass. 2 band members in a relationship is a recipe for disaster. Also, the "Guitar is harder than bass" attitude will not lead him anywhere good. THis could even be a good idea. Prepare for lecture:

Darwinism, in my opinion, holds true very well for music, in 2 ways in particular. However, this instance requires only requires I explain one.

Part of Darwinism is that organisms survive by cross-breeding. All genres result from the combining of 2 or more genres. Rockabilly is primarily a combination of "Country" and "Blues". No genre ca survive if it remains exactly the same. This could be good. Everyone draws inspiration from someone else. This could be good. It could create a positive result in your band, if he doesn't take it too far (i.e excessive harmonics, 10-minute tapping solos, 128th-note tremolos, etc.). Just make sure to stay out of his metalcore band if you don't want to play in it.

THank you guys for all the responses. I'm definitely going to sever ties with him. Not working. His girlfriend can bass if she wants to, I'll just quite the band, but I will have no part of a band where I'm supposed to be the "great" bassist giving someone lessons whom will take my place.

tell him to teach her guitar, so she can be the rhythm guitarist. Seeing that you're severing ties, that wouldn't quite work out. my last post was tongue in cheek, I didn't really mean it, terrible idea. Just pisses me off how someone would be that insensitive. "teach my girlfriend bass, so she can eventually take your spot in the band, even though you're the best bassist I know." or however he put it. what a tool. You know what? Scratch that. Give her a couple lessons, hit on her. Then if she goes for it, shut her down, then quit. Or do her, whatever makes up for him insulting you like that.
