what am i doing wrong??

...the neck of my p smells like puke and my hands become kinda sticky when i play it
Wow! Sooo MANY jokes sitting right there waiting for us and no one's going for it. I guess I won't open that can o' worms either...YET. :D
As a general rule of thumb, you want to avoid making any statement that starts with "The neck of my...smells like puke". That's just BEGGING to get buried in great jokes! :hiding:

Look, if it stinks and it's sticky clean it. Four months old, four years old...who cares. Clean it. Your strings are probably dirty too. After you clean the instrument, put fresh strings on it. The Quarter Pounders are strong, loud pick ups. There's no way the bass sounds like it did before. Either you're not playing it loud enough to hear the tone or your amp is set up incorrectly or something.

I'm going to stop now because the temptation to open the can of GREAT JOKE whoop ass is just too tempting. :smug:

if you are going for a harris sound, (Steve Harris, right?) I'd get some kind of flats. I am not sure that will help your pup problems any, but if the strings on it are shot and smell funky, might as well give them a try.

And anyone who thinks basses are slabs of wood and things is terribly mistaken. Some may be, but mine are not. My trucks and my basses are women, with names and thats just that.

I have a SPB-3 in my Fender Aerodyne. The SPB-3 is a hot pickup, with a bigger low end and fuller sound than just about any stock P pickup. You should definitely notice SOME kind of difference with it.

From the symptoms you describe, it sounds like you need to clean the neck, and do a thorough setup on your bass. There are several good guides on how to do setups over in the Hardware forum. You should also make sure that your pickup and pots are wired properly. If all else fails, take it to a repairman to get things put right.
