what are some good string for my P-bass special

1. Go to Welcome to Bass Strings Online - Your Custom Bass String Shop...
2. Message Jason (SLaPiNFuNK on TalkBass) and tell him about your instrument and what styles you like to play.
3. Wait on the correct strings to come in.
It's really that easy. I'm a long time guitar player who got my first bass last year. I did this ^ and arrived at exactly what I needed - and (get this) inexpensively!

Strings are very much about personal taste.
Assuming from your post you don't have a whole lot of experience.
Start with: round wound or flatwound. Rounds are brighter, and have more sustain, Flats are thumpier.
Gauge: Heavy, Medium or light, lighter strings have less tension. Heavy strings are useful for drop tuning because they remain more rigid.
Metal used: Stainless or Nickel
As many players as their are on TB, I guarantee every one has their own opinion about this.
I suggest going to webstrings.com where you can try a bunch of different strings for very little money. Once you decide what you prefer, try different manufacturers.
The journey is what it's "all" about grasshopper.

thanks for the tips. i heard that flatwounds on a p-bass are great. I think Pino Palladino uses them and thats the sound i want.
OK - I have several Ps and have tried nearly every string.
For rounds - for a zingier, more resonant or piano like sound - the D'addario XL 160 or 165 is a good place to start. Low cost and a darn good string
For Flats - less highs and a more concentrated upper bass and mid for more thump - the LaBella 760s are for sure the way to go for a P.
