Hello,

My name is Etienne, I mainly play fretless bass and few months ago I began a youtube bass related channel (Ikochallenge). I am currently trying to reframe what should be my channel. I'm wondering if it should be a pure bass channel or a more general music channel. That's why I'm here :D
So my question is when you are on youtube what are you looking for: Covers? Licks, riffs explanations? gear review? Theory? Music composition tutos, music related fun...? Is it specifically bass related? Any constructive answer will help me :)

If you want clicks and views, consider playing covers of current top 40 with young audience on bass and explain/show how to play the tricky parts.

When I watch youtube bass related it's for gear reviews or gear use. Sometimes "how to" videos. Wiring explanations, pedal board setup, bass tech, etc.

FWIW it's harder to use a video lesson on a fretless because when you zoom in the camera looses positional context. If you are playing fretless in videos I suggest discussing techniques and exercises. Maybe making it a "fretless" channel so FL players can find it easily.

For the fretless aspect, yes I noticed it and plan to show tabs/finger position while playing.

Yes you are totally right, I have seen this a lot and not only on music videos. So no chichat, copy that!

In a nutshell, you are looking for bass content and not musical entertainment.

This seems like the tail wagging the dog. You should go for what you know (non-accidental Pat Travers reference).

Create content about things that you like, know about and are good at. What do you look at when on the ol’ YT? Covers? Technique? Musicological stuff? You gotta follow that dream (Elvis).

As I’m writing this, I’m having the same emotions as when guys ask “what bass should I buy?” No stranger knows enough to answer that question.

I’d like to point to Adam Neely’s channel. He didn’t start off fully-formed. His content evolved as he tried various ideas of many years. It’s a journey. People are interested in that aspect as well. We like stories and narrative. It’s very connected to the way humans make sense of the world.

Everyone has a story. I personally enjoy musicians points-of-view. It’s like music, the telling can be more engaging than the story itself.

Glad you mentioned ADAM NEELY. He is one of the few instructional videos worth watching. He is chatty BUT he is conveying musicall related info at a good clip.

The drinking culture is tempering a little bit.

I got together with a coworker for dinner in his room in the barracks. I brought the vodka (excellent stuff sold by grandmas out of car trunk, $6.). If you open a bottle , you are expected to finish it. Was months before I drank again.

Smell of vodka incredibly strong on the morning bus shuttle.

BTW, the usual vodka shot in a bar is 100gms. So 5 shots per bottle. In the good ol Soviet days, vodka was subsidized by the government and cost 3 rubles, so three strangers in the buying line would chip in and share a bottle.

PS, in Russia, dont try to get your girlfriend drunk.

I was in Russia in 1990. It was on a geo-environmental scientific conference tour. I discovered it was best to give my talks in the morning because at 11 a.m. the cognac and vodka came out for grandiose proclamations and toasts. Then at lunch, more vodka. After lunch it was naptime.
