How Jesus Became God - Bart D. Ehrman
Book outlining The Gospels and the writings/viewpoints of Paul. Deals with the first 4 centuries of the Christian Church, mostly the century after Jesus passed.
Written by a very educated and well read teacher who was raised Christian and studied it all his life, who taught at some very prestigious schools, but eventually became agnostic.
Explains how the early church viewed Jesus and the question of when he became exalted. At birth, at baptism, at resurrection, was he always divine?
Shows the differences in describing events between the chapters of The Gospels, being as they were written at diffent times - between 60 - 150 yeaqrs after Jesus death, by different people, living in different places speaking diffent languages.
How the Christian religion developed and view of Jesus as a man, or an angel, or Son of God, or God himself. Then throw the Holy Spirit into the mix and one can see why their are so many different viewpoints and factions regarding this history of this religion.
Also throw in the Jewish viewpoint from the Jewish leaders of that time and the Romans and their Emporers and it all gets pretty heady.
Reads well in a casual, modern style. The guy tends to be pretty short on his points - doesn't drag on and on and belabor, so the book moves right along.
I'm not regular religious, but I like Yahweh and JesusMichael and Spirit. The things I feel are left out in Christianity I have found interestingly enough through "Womens studies." I'm not into Goddess worship or Wiccan really, but some interesting gaps and insights were pointed out to me when talking to a woman Catholic Minister who was my guitar player's mom. Very interesting lady.
As far as The Bible: just give the Prayer Book of St Thomas and I'm happy. The Bible is an interesting read in itself. An eye opener for sure!
