What are you reading Chapter 4

How is this one? Dark Matter was so awesome!
It was a fantastic book in my opinion.
Never heard of Blake Crouch until I got dark matter, now I’ve been burning through his books.
I’m still in a debate with myself to which one was better, but both matter and recursion had me from beginning to end.
Read through the wayward pines series as well and those were great reads as well, but not on the level of those two.

After the Rat Pack book, and its references to the JFK connections and thus, Marilyn Monroe as well, this was the next selection from the to-be-read shelf:

From the Macmillan Publishers description:

Beyond the headlines—and the too-familiar stories of heartbreak and desolation—was a woman far more curious, searching, witty, and hopeful than the one the world got to know. Now, for the first time, readers can meet the private Marilyn and understand her in a way we never have before. Fragments is an unprecedented collection of written artifacts—notes to herself, letters, even poems—in Marilyn's own handwriting, never before published, along with rarely seen intimate photos.

Jotted in notebooks, typed on paper, or written on hotel letterhead, these texts reveal a woman who loved deeply and strove to perfect her craft. They show a Marilyn Monroe unsparing in her analysis of her own life, but also playful, funny, and impossibly charming. The easy grace and deceptive lightness that made her performances indelible emerge on the page, as does the simmering tragedy that made her last appearances so affecting.

This really is an interesting look at another side of an icon we thought we knew.

Slight Rant:

Why in the world can't I buy the Heechee Saga ( Gateway ) series for my kindle?? I can get one book in "e" format, which was released, but as it stands, since the author has passed, the others will never be. THANKFULLY, I own the entire series in paperback form. I love books, but I've been converted to my Kindle nook as my primary reading device. I love it. At my age being able to adjust the font size really helps too.

Unfortunately the entire series is getting increasingly hard to get. I've seen a book, in rough condition, selling for nearly a grand (!!) If I didn't like the series so well, and it wasn't so godawful to find now, I'd be tempted to sell mine!

Anyhoo....

Tezuka’s characters surround Astro Boy

War and Peace in the Art of Tezuka Osamu: The humanism of his epic manga
Interesting how it all plays out. As the world turns, heroes come and go. If, like me, you recognize any of these characters, you may find this essay interesting :)

From the intro,

"… Tezuka Osamu was born in November 1928 in Osaka and died at the age of 60, in February 1989. In his relatively short life he produced more than 700 manga, both long and short, which in total amount to some 150,000 pages. I suggest that four major features underlie this large body of work: respect for the natural environment, respect for the life of every living creature, a deep scepticism towards science and civilization, and a strong commitment to anti-war and peace causes. …"

Sitting here waiting for my truck brakes to be redone and they have a big coffee table book about University of Alabama students who fought in WWII. I learned my family physician when i was a kid had dropped out of medical school and went in the navy as a corpsman and landed on Iwo Jima with the Marines. My high school chemistry teacher was a bomber pilot in the 8th Army Air corps, and my junior high typing teacher was a ferry pilot flying new aircraft to Europe during the war. It’s pretty humbling to see the loooong list of people who stepped up and that’s just the people with ties to the university. It’s more than a little humbling.

Contrary to what folks are told, type 2 diabetes is reversible via diet.

This is not true. I am a type 2 diabetic. My diet can control my blood sugar, but my diabetes is not going to be reversed. I will always have to eat right and/or take medication to keep my sugar under control. If I could truly reverse it, I would be able to eat whatever I wanted and my sugar would regulate itself. I had my sugar controlled with diet and exercise for years, but I was never cured. Many times it can be controlled, but not reversed.

From experience, I tend to agree....
