In an exciting, difficult and sometimes scary part of my life's journey. Sold my house of 32 years and left San Francisco. It has been nine months and we still don't know where or when we will settle into one place. Started reading "The Fellowship of the Ring" and read this today:

"The road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say."

I love Tolkien. Enjoy it!

@shawshank72 , just finished Billy Summers myself. I really enjoyed it too.
I did get a bit worried at one stage that he was gonna go for a bit of the horror/supernatural (I'm sure you know where), but happily he kept it real.
Glad you did too.
Oh I know the part your talking of, made me a little worried as well.
Just a good solid story, love when he writes that way.

Hold on man. We are all here to follow whichever dream that we cling to. Your story may end up very well. Gods blessings.

Dennis E. Taylor writes hard sci fi. I love his stuff. He did a trilogy called Bobiverse about a guy who died and wakes up a hundred years later as a computer AI. Fantastic books. Hard sci fi. Very little interpersonal drama and more just kinda interesting things happening. I just finished another one he did called The Singularity Trap. A few hundred years in the future and people are mining the asteroid belt. A guy finds some goo on a rock and touches it and it replaces him cell by cell till he’s all nanites.

Best military sci-fi I ever read was Joe Haldeman's Forever War. So good.

The Forever War is excellent. The sequel is, how can I put this politely, not excellent. It starts really well but then it’s almost like he’s trying to undo the hard sci-fi world he created. Disappointing, but yeah, I can’t recommend the first book highly enough, really creative concepts but also really believable and relatable characters.

One story from Forever War series is included into this anthology I'm reading. I liked it very much and am planning to read more of Joe Haldeman's books. I understand he is a Vietnam vet so his writing is not a pure imagination.
There's also a really good military Sci-Fi series called "Old Men War" by Joe Scalzi. A great reading, highly recommended.

Yes, he is a veteran and he studied physics when he returned to the US, so writing military hard sci-fi is definitely a case of “write what you know”, you can really feel the depth of knowledge in The Forever War.

edit - just looked it up and he actually graduated in physics before he was drafted into the army, my mistake.
