OK, I purchased Hemispheres and AFTK last night....I was only familiar some of the tracks on each aside from the hits. I can say that after giving them two listens that I so far I prefer AFTK over Hemispheres. I need to listen to both of them a lot more. I love the bass playing on both and love his Ric tone on both...
Anything from Moving Pictures on back, But the album that hooked me is still my #1;

I've watched this thread and haven't been able to come up with my top 5 albums.
With how different the era's of Rush music are I just roll with what I feel like that day.
Sometimes it's the Prog, sometimes the jazzy 80's stuff, and sometimes it's the punch you in the face rock of VT, S&A and Clockwork Angels.

If you're not a prog fan you're not going to like Hemispheres as much, but the musicianship on that album I find exceeds any of their other albums. It still blows my mind that those guys made all that with three people. Pay special attention to the bass playing on Cygnus X-1 Book II, it's killer. Not taking anything away from AFTK, because it's in my list too, but Hemispheres is just so amazing....

And then there's "5a", where I'd put all of these: 2112, A Farewell to Kings, Fly by Night, Counterparts, Grace Under Pressure, Snakes and Arrows. And the rest aren't bad, either! For a diehard fan like myself, it's too difficult to pick just five, or even 10.

Listened a little more to Cygnus X-1 Book II today. I think it will take many many listenings to get a better feel for this tune, but I really like the flow and the grooves. I thinking knowing the lyrics and the story behind the entire "apacolyptic trilogy" would make this an easier task for me. But mainly....I love Geddy's tone.....

You certainly aren't! It took me seemingly forever to learn it on guitar, and I'm struggling to learn it on bass, and you're right, it is like one long bass exercise, but if you can play it even at a mediocre level (like me), you'll eventually develop tons of chops. I'm in a Tom Petty cover band now, and compared to Rush, Petty's music is a breeze to play!
AFTK is pretty awesome. The track Cygnus X-1 is one of the Rush tracks that got me interested in bass. And if you don't have it yet, you should get 2112.
Top 5?
Pretty easy choices for me:
1) Permanent Waves
2) Moving Pictures
3) All the World's a Stage
4) Hemispheres
5) Signals
I chose mine to be the albums that I enjoy listening to the most as a complete piece of work, all of the moments feel special.
Other albums have their highs and lows, but these are all near the pinnacle of perfection.
I feel the writing and playing on these particular studio albums stands out above the rest overall, and All the World's a Stage really gives some added balls to all of the songs.
Number 5 was a choice between Signals and Caress of Steel, but I think Signals wins out, perhaps more because of the aggressive bass tone than anything else.
Permament Waves is by far my all time favorite, and always will be.
I just wish that there was a DVD quality film of an All the World's a Stage era live show.
