I'd say look for the thump in your fingers. There is a wide array of tonal differences in how you use your fingers/where you place your fingers. All of these basses have different style and vibes, and while I do agree with all of these bass recommendations and their tonal qualities, You gotta spend time with the bass, let the wood and metal warm up and vibe with you.

Get a fretless Lakland P with the Darkstar pickups.

Eh, something with flats and/or fretless will get lots of low end as is. The P or Rob Allen MB2/Mouse would be my first choice.

Technique will be pretty important. Playing near the neck will roll off a lot of high end and give you some serious thump.

....perhaps just as important as the bass and technique is your rig! A mid scooped 8x10 ain't gonna cut it. Something either bi-amped or sent to a 15" will give some nice low end.

When I plugged my newly aquired 90's fretless Godin A-4 w/ black nylon flatwounds into a Fender 100w 1X15 combo, I was AMAZED by the low end being pumped out that I never heard with a P.

My usual weapon of choice is my Ibanez SRX 590 5-string. But for a more powerfull lowent drive I'll breakout the T-Bird. Running through my 1200W Ampeg SVT Unit, it may very well be the cause of small earth quakes
