What bassist has the best gig?

I would say Robert Trujillio. He did not have to replace Cliff like Jason did so he did not get hazed and messed with the whole time he has been in the band. Plus he makes an assload of money. From my understanding, he is treated just like one of the guys.

That's a good one. He's such a beast. Musically, I loved his gig with Infectious Grooves better than Metallica. Just more fun to play on bass. But yeah, these days, he's a great bassist in a great band making serious bank. What's not to love?

(Note, this is not my answer to OP's question, just offering this as a point of interest...)

I was at a clinic Jeff Berlin gave at the Berklee College of Music circa 1980 or '81 and he offered this comment regarding his work with the Bruford band:

"Jaco Pastorius and I have the two best bass gigs in the world; I mean, what other bass player anywhere has 100% carte blanche to play whatever they want?"

Not so lucky right now, but before the last couple months, yes. Although I've always felt he plays what the songs need.

I agree there. Just not too impressed with what I've heard. It's PERFECT for those songs. I'm not the biggest FF fan either so that my be coloring my thoughts.

I just read up on Clayton on wikipedia, and what's funny to me is how he apparently had no clue what he was doing during the first years of U2. I'm not ragging on the guy, but talk about LUCKY.

To be fair, my only knowledge of U2 basslines consists of steady 8ths root notes.
