What brand tapes for a p bass?

I've got D'addario, GHS & Labella tapes on a RW-P, '74 Telecaster Bass & Gibson G3 respectively.
GHS & D'addario are,I think, the same string with diffrrent coloured silk wrap, Labellas are stiffer & a li'l more old school sounding. More thump, less bite, but still plenty able to do a sweet slap if needed.
I think I like Labella best.
Altho GHS will fit 34" string-thru body. I don't think others will, oh, hang on, the Labellas are on a string-thru (G3) but this bass has the 2x2 headstock.

What color is the silks on the ghs? The dadarrios looks like it's the same as chromes

The silks on D'addario tapewounds are the same blue color as on the Chromes.

One thing that nobody has mentioned is how much less tension tapewounds have when compared with flats. It is very noticeable on shortscales. I put a set of D'addario tapewounds on my Gibson SG bass and, while usable, I have to use a lighter touch in order to keep the E string from vibrating against the fretboard when plucked. Love the tone though.

I have the strings set very low and raising them would solve this problem but I am reluctant to do it because I like the low action.

Well, I ended up not taking the tape wounds the other night. I had never played with these guys before and wasn't sure what to expect. Ive had them on since getting home though. So far I'm digging them. They aren't quite as different as I was expecting. I would say they sound similar to ghs precision flats on the low end with a little more snap up top. Also, they are much less claky than flats. I think they will be a great recording string. I'll put some sound clips up when I can

I have D'AD tapes on my P bass and just put a set on my Highway One Jazz. I usually play classic rock. One of the guitarists told me tapes wouldn't "fit" with the classic rock and he knows everything. Kind of funny...they sound really good. The can have a bluesy, mellow, warm sound but tweak the EQ a little and they have some punch too.

Be careful! It starts with a guitarist picking your strings, and the next thing you know, you're shopping with the drummer for a new amp. :-{)


But for a standard or medium scale I do like the GHS 3060s better than the D'Addarios.

I got some La Bella black nylons today just by chance. The shop owner didnt even know he had them until I barely saw the La Bella logo on a rack under some strings. Got them home, put them on, and I discovered this was the string I have been looking for my whole life. Sounds amazing on my Epiphone silverburst Tbird.

I played a set of the GHS black tapes for a CD our CCM band cut this spring. They sounded smooth and maintained a big sound. I play a Spector Forte 5. I love these tapes looser tension than SS FW and of course the sound but after one month the taped started to peel at the nut. The nut is brass so that might of made a difference, I'm not sure.
Anyone else have the peel problem? Do you just patch it with electrical tape?
