what cabinet ??

i'm looking to improve my sound, i play funk and fingerstyle classic rock. i use a geedy jazz bass , SWR 400 head, alesis compressor and a peavey 410 cabinet....it all sounds pretty good but would like to improve on it. i think my cabinet is the weak link, if you agree can you recomend a cabinet you think will help to achieve an even better sound, thanks

Personally, I like the two cab idea... like 2 x 112 or if you need alot of volume 2 x 210.

Way more portable than a single heavier cab, way easier to hear yourself on small stages with the drivers closer to your ears. Bring one cab to rehearsals and small venues. Easy to get in and out of a small car.

Favourites around here are

Bergantino
Aguilar
Epifani

Cant go wrong with any of those.

Sounding "better" is totally subjective, and since it's YOUR ears that are looking for a change, it's YOUR ears that need to pick a cabinet. First, decide if the 410 platform is right for you, or if you could get by with less, or maybe even need more. Then, play YOUR amp through as many cabs, (of your chosen configuration) as you can find, and buy based on how it sounds. I used to play with either a 215, or 610, and have moved down to either a 210/15, or 212. The 212 is perfect for me, but maybe not enough for you. Once you get that part figured out, the rest is just a good time doing cab demo's, 'till something knocks you out. Buy THAT cab. And have fun with the process. It should always be fun.

its an older 410 peavey ( approx 15 yrs) with an adjustable horn, its very trustworthy and reliable but i just can't seem to get a high end soundthat i hear some pros getting, my sound is somewhat thin to me and i'd like it warmer and fatter but very bright when i'm funking out....maybe i'll never be satisfide ??

I've used and A-B-ed Epis and Bergantinos and I played through numerous Peavey cabs from around the same time that yours was made. Peavey scorpions are the Timex of bass speakers and the older cabs were put together like tanks, but you will certainly hear a profound difference between an older Peavey cab and the Epi's / Bergies.

For funk and rock I suggest the Epifani cabs. You can find a used UL or UL2 410 at reasonable prices and they are incredibly light. They deliver fantastic clarity across the frequency spectrum and have more on the bottom end than the Bergie AE410.

A Bergantino AE410 is also a great cab, creating a warm clear tone from low to highs, but I find that the Epi's are better for rock music and over-all punch.

Truth be told, you could also go with an older SWR 410 (which is a less expensive route than an Epi or a Bergie) and you'll hear vast improvement. I was using SWR for several years before I made the switch to Epis and Bergies and was ALMOST content with my tone.

Good luck.
